Hi. We are considering a short weekend hike on the long trail. we don't want to drive much past 8 hours, which is how far it is to williamstown, ma. my question is how easy is it to access the trail there, and what is the hiking like at this point of entry? thanks! we are probably going to hike in Sat, and out sunday to drive home.

you can park overnight at the Greylock Community Club in No.Adams. the trail is 100 yards from there

Re parking, I second Wolf's recommendation. I parked at the Greylock club during the second half of my LT hike (http://www.trailjournals.com/entry.cfm?id=205426). Just be sure to stop in and tell them.
Re. the hiking, it's not that hard - the elevation gains are fairly spread-out unless you're hiking all the way to Rt. 9 (very steep descent) which is unlikely for an out-and-back hike. As I recall, the terrain is suitable for camping if you don't want to stay at Seth Warner Shelter.
Although the LT is relatively easy in that area, be aware that there is a 1450' elevation gain to reach the top of the ridge where the actual LT begins. From there the terrain is rolling with a few good views. On a short weekend at this time of year it would be difficult to reach Congdon shelter (13.9 miles total), so you'll either need to stop at Seth Warner or camp somewhere in between as was suggested. Although I haven't been past Roaring Branch recently, there should be water available there if you should decided to go that far (9.6 miles total).
