So I was catching up on one of my favorite geeky blogs when I ran across a site trying to convince geeks to get their exercise by walking distances equivalent to those travelled in JRR Tolkien's books The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Here's the distance table for the main sections:

470 miles: Follow Frodo and Sam on the quest from Rauros to Mt. Doom.

786 miles: Travel with Aragorn from Isengard to Dunharrow through the Paths of the Dead to Minas Tirith.

A few years ago the Cobb YMCA actually had a "hike the AT from GA to ME". You earned so many "miles" based on the type/amount of exercise you did at the facility.
