Both Brown Fork Gap and Cable Gap Shelters have reputedly reliable springs, but since it's only 15 miles, you may want to carry more than normal in case one or both are dry.

Let us know and have a great hike.

There was water at 3-4 locations on this section of the trail six weeks ago. I did not go looking off trail as it was unnecessary.

Was a beautiful hike....and the climb out of Stecoah Gap was impressive. Carried 3 liters of water. No water at Brown Fork Gap shelter. There was water at Cable Gap shelter. Stream north of Walker Gap had water in places but not really running...more like a marsh. It rained almost all day on the 18th and morning of 19th so things may change. The climb down to Fontana was equally impressive...especially in the rain at dusk.

Thanks for the update! We're heading up to do that section starting out tomorrow. It's raining cats and dogs here in western NC and we actually couldn't be happier. First time we've ever looked forward to a rainy hike! Thanks again for the news and glad your trip went well!!:)

We just got back from our trip(Stecoah to Fontana)-AWESOME! It was peak with the leaves, and the rain made it even more beautiful. Water wasn't an issue. Here's a heads up!

STECOAH-water
Brown Fork Shelter-Not sure
Cody Gap-never found it
1/4 mile before Yellow Creek road crossing-GREAT source on hillside
Cable Gap-water
Walker Gap(Down hill from campsites)-GREAT sources

Hope this helps and hope your hikes go as great as ours!!:sun
