I just got off the trail a few hours ago. It was my first AT trip with my 11yo son. We walked from Lemon Gap to Standing Bear and the following is what we saw:

Lemon Gap to Max Patch: We crossed several small streams, with 2 of them running pretty good (cascading over rocks) the others were pooled enough to filter out of. The water source just south of Roaring Fork Shelter was good and the PVC pipe jus north of Max Patch was running, albeit a bit slow.

Max Patch to Groundhog Creek Shelter: DRY! there was one moist spot in the ground just south of Max Patch but there was no way to get water there. The spring at Groundhog Creek Shelter was not necessarily flowing, but there was a 6" deep puddle there that I pumped from without any trouble.

Groundhog Creek Shelter to Standing Bear: Painter's Branch wans flowing, I could hear it from up on the trail, however, I didn't wander down to investigate how well it was flowing. You could certainly get water out of it.

I hope this helps someone.
