This might be a stupid question. But are the blazes on The Long Trail white?

Nope. They're blue.

If they are blue then what color are the side trail blazes?

Oops. Read the question wrong. The Long Trail is blazed white. All side trails are blazed blue.

Not only are they white, but I believe that the long trail's use of white blazes pre-dates the AT, as much as it pains me to say that. I think the concept of white blazes for our AT came from the Long Trail. Someone in the Green Mt. Club might be able to confirm that. On one of my shuttles in Vermont I was told that AT had borrowed this idea from the LT.

Yes, the blazes are white. Whats the matter LW - been awhile since you've been here, Aye? Gotta say to - some idiot wrote in pen on the LT/AT junction sign how he got lost hiking the AT. He had to pass at least two signs determining the junction. I don't care if he was north or south bound on the AT. At least three signs in the matter of a mile from the junction. The stupid idiot had to carve/write with a ball point pen how he unfotunatley hiked two miles of the LT thinking it was the AT on the sign. Idiots!!!

The Long Trail is blazed in white because it was there first, and that's how they blazed it.

For many years, the first 1/2 mile of the AT north of Maine Junction was blue blazed.

If you read the signs at Maine Junction, then you shouldn't make the wrong route choice.
