Hey all,

I'm heading down to take my Sawyer Cert course Saturday and Sunday. I'm heading down to Thunder Rock Campground to stay tonight and probably Saturday night as well. I know I'll have nothing to do tonight and probably tomorrow night as well (I don't know when class gets out) so if you are in the neighborhood stop on by and set a spell - maybe tell some lies and such.

Where's Thunder Rock?

Damn. Gonna miss you by a day or two. Meeting my SOBO friend Brit in this same area but probably on Monday to hike to Springer.

Hmmm.. only 2:12 away.

Wow, that is truly the middle of nowhere.

I'll probably be at Garter Gap Shelter with my three ducklings--two people planning a NOBO next year, and my DH out breaking in his new backpack. Everyone is excited about maybe trying out their rain gear, too.

Well I have been wanting to recon that site for a while. Low and behold my sawyer certification course is being held 14 miles away from there!

So either get up at 0500 tomorrow to be to class on time Saturday, drive back after dark Saturday night, just to do it again Sunday...

OR

Go down there tonight and camp. Get up and go to class tomorrow. Tomorrow night do some more camping. And Sunday after class is done drive by Deals Gap on the way home and check out that old AT route.

I liked option #2.

Getting read to log off and head out. Don't burn the place down while I am gone.

Got a call from SGT Rock saying that Thunder Rock Campground is closed. He's been driving around looking for another place to camp for a couple of hours now. Needless to say he won't be camped at Thunder Rock afterall this weekend like he'd planned.

I'm glad I didn't head out for the 900 mile drive. :D

Uh, for someone who seems to be great at planning, I think Rock came up short this time. :-?

Me too Tin Man...LOL.

Oh and he almost hit a 400 pound bear with his car. (His best guess on the bear's weight I'd assume.) Said he came around a corner and had to slam on his brakes. Also said his first thought was "that's a big damn dog... oh wait, that's a BEAR!"

Tin Man

Yikes. Well, at least he now knows where NOT to camp.

That's what he said too.

The weekend is already quite a bit more exciting than he was bargaining for.

It sure is. Last time he called was right after missing the bear. That was a little over an hour ago.

It turned out to be a great weekend. Since I had to look hard for a place I ended up finding a place that was hard to find - at least in the dark.

But now...

I'm a lumberjack and I'm OK, I sleep all night and I work all day!

I'm a B level sawyer with a crosscut saw.

Do you enjoy buttered scones with tea?!?!?

Yes I do...

Was the campground closed because it was after season, or is it closed permanently?

SGT Rock
10-29-2007, 11:54
It was closed temporarily but not for either of those reasons. The campground is behind one of the powerhouses on the Ocoee river, and they are doing some major maintenance on the powerhouse. So they are both blocking to road to the campground with maintenance cranes and trucks, and most of the parking area in the camp is blocked by other trucks and stuff. You can still walk through there and there is a parking area on the side of 64/74 on the north side of the bridge. There was not a scheduled opening date listed.

Where did you end up camping?

SGT Rock
10-29-2007, 16:23
Up highway 30 between 64/74 and reliance. There are some free campsites with fire rings and tent pads right beside the highway. I had driven past one about 4 times before I realized it was down there.

Uhhhh...do you also dress in women's clothing and hang around in bars?

Hey on a more serious note. Did your recon indicate wether my plan to stash a vehicle at Thunder Rock for my hike is still a good one? Or is there somwhere else within the next 10-15 miles that would be better?

SGT Rock
10-31-2007, 13:03
Per HikerHead it should be fine. The only thing not accounted for now is when the site will open up again.

Thanks, just wondering if your observations may have changed that thought.

SGT Rock

Well I should have parked and walked across the bridge to look the place over, but I didn't want to get in the way.
