I'll be in SoCal in a couple of weeks; I was wondering if anyone had any current information more specific than what's on the Pacific Crest Trail Association's website (http://www.pcta.org/)...

It says the forest are closed. Not enough info?

Current Trail Conditions

Wildfire Warnings!
As of 10/23/07:

The Cleveland, Angeles, and San Bernardino National Forests are closed to ALL Recreation due to extensive and dangerous wildfires.

For your safety, please do not use the PCT in this Region until further notice.

Thank you.

No, not enough...aren't there some sections that aren't in those forests? I was hoping maybe someone who lives out thataway could provide more specifics. Maybe in a couple of weeks (when I plan to be there) the situation will have changed...

It's probably best to ask on the pct-l. There's lots of folks on the list from SoCal in the area. I'm pretty sure those forest cover most of the trail in the south. There may be some spots you'll be able to hike but I wouldn't count on it.

The PCTA website says until further notice and since the updates only a few days old, you can probably trust it.

I'm not subscribed to the pct-l. Could you ask on there for me? Please?! :o

Depends where you want to go or how much you want to see/hike. How long will you be out here and where?

Best outfitter chain around her (superior in terms of staff knowledge to REI) is "Adventure 16". Go to any one of them and ask about trail conditions.

Right now, I think the stretch from San Gorgonio Pass (near Palm Springs) north is open, good water. Very mountainous but trails aren't bad. San Gorgonio is the highest mountain in SoCal, good training for Whitney, worth a 2-3 trip.

I did. The PCT is closed from the border to mile 455 near Aqua Dulce until further notice. It was suggested you try from Walker Pass, near Onyx (mi 648) north in the South Sierras or the California Coastal Trail. (http://www.californiacoastaltrail.info/cms/pages/main/index.html)

Check out the CCT map link (http://californiacoastaltrail.info/hikers/hikers_main.php).

The section between Aqua Dulce and Walker Pass pretty much sucks, unless you like mostly dry desert conditons

You think? You think wrong! :p

Although Sly doesn't have to be so snotty, he's right, according to the PCT Assn site and the USFS site for San Bernadino National Forest.

It's closed from the border to mile 455? Yeow.

That outfitter sounds like a good idea, too. Thanks, guys!

Hopefully, when I fly out there in a couple of weeks, the situation will have improved. I'll be staying at a little condo in San Diego (La Jolla), and also visiting friends in Carlsbad, CA. They're not hiker folk, really, but they will do (brief) day hikes...

I encourage you to call Adventure 16 (google them) and ask them who to contact. You should also look on the websites for San Bernadino National Forest and also the San Gorgonion Wildnerness Association (also Cleveland National Forest, which is Los Angeles County).

Southern part of the PCT south of San Jacinto State Park was hammered pretty bad, and is still pretty much a danger zone. Here is the page for updates on San Jacinto; check it daily for updates.

Most fires in Orange and San Diego Counties, as well as Riverside/San Bernadino, are coming under control, so some of the state and federal lands are being reopened, and more can be expected to open if the winds do not pick up much this weekend (forecast is for more "Santa Ana" winds, which are a big part of the fire problem, but I'm hoping not severe). So keep checking.

Camo.. if you can't get where you want on the PCT you might consider an alternative. Here is a little trail in Arizona. I hope the link works. Arizona Trail Association, Working to build, maintain and promote the Arizona (http://www.aztrail.org/)

I'll have to check out Adventure 16, thanks. :)

Those fires are still burning, huh? :(

That might be a bit far afield, but knowledge is power; I appreciate the suggestion. :p

I'm dying to know how these wildfires and droubt will affect the thru-hiking season next year. I'm seriously considering a thru next year, and am worried about this.

It shouldn't affect next year at all. They have some good trail crews down south that would clear any fallen tress but most of the trail is chaparral. Lots of the PCT goes through burnt areas. Some of it's OK, some of it is kind of depressing. Still, IMO, it's a great trail.
