I'm not worried about the AT, I know where to get the maps. But a couple of weekends ago I found myself in Shinning Rock Wilderness where I came across several other backpackers and all of us were trying to figure out where Art Loeb goes north from where Shinning Creek comes in from the east.

I found the trail, that's not the problem. But I was amazed with the variety trial maps varies hikers brought forth. I'm using National Geographic, for example map 780, PISGAH RANGER DISTRICT, for that hike. But I saw a lot of larger scale maps of just that region that looked like they were from some government source.

Any recommendations for sources for maps off the AT?

You need to check out The Forest Place, in Brevard NC
http://theforestplace.usihost.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=SFNT. Plenty of maps there
or
I got my Gov issue Shinningrock/middle prog map from the ranger station down the road.

Here's a pretty cool source where you can download USGS Topo maps. You have to play around with the search feature to get the hang of it.

USGS maps show trails sometimes. Look at the software Topo. It's based on USGS maps. But, USGS maps are not updated frequently enough to show relocations.

There are better maps out there for hiking.
