Any ideas? I was thinking about 10-15 degrees cooler than Asheville up around 5000 ft. Does that sound accurate?

General rule of thumb: 1 degree cooler for ever 500' around here. I check G-Burg and that always serves me about right.
It's 42 degrees right now at Purchase Knob (Eastern Smokies) and 50 at Look Rock (western smokies).
Last April it dropped from 78 degrees at G-Burg to 55 at Newfound Gap when I was passing thru the Smokies.

Standard lapse rate is 2 deg. C per 1000 ft. of altitude change (or as Sgt said, 1 per 500)

According to the NPS web site, right now it's 52-F at Purchase knob, at 5086 feet, and 66-F in Gatlinburg, at 1594 feet. That's pretty close to the 2-C/1000ft theoretical difference.
