Sgt. Rock showed me some plans for making a hammock, which looks interesting. I also can get a pretty good deal on a Hennessy, *especially* if I'm willing to take one without the bug netting. And I also see that the ENOs are pretty cheap.

Much of the year, in many places I camp, bugs aren't that big an issue, but some places (the Croatan), they are.

I want to avoid trying 5 different combinations and having the stuff I'm no longer using lying around. But I can try things out a *lot* cheaper if I make my own. Do people do serious camping with a homemade hammock that has no bug screen? Is this a stupid question?

Go on over to Hammock forums. Those folks over there can help out with any problem you can think of...and a bunch you never even considered.
There is a lot of crossover with members/posters with this site but that's
'where to start'.

Take the final step in your conversion to the dark side: hammockforums (http://www.hammockforums.net/?)

But, to answer your question; yes. Clothing and a headnet have worked for me in Florida, but a bug net is sooooooo easy to make that I only did that once.

Here is an option for a hammock without bug netting, some have made their own netting. A poster at Hammock Forums called HeadchangeforU posted plans for a homemade hennesy clone with removeable bug netting, you could could just use his plans (supposedly an easy project) and use the MLD net. When it is cold and you need more insulation, you leave the weight of the net at home.

If I were going to the Okefenokee in May, I'd take a regular hennessy or a Claytor maybe. For the AT, the above rig might be the ticket.
