Is there an Internet forum anywhere, where A.T. and other volunteer footpath maintainers can talk back and forth about things like, for example, how best to install Carsonite posts?

The ATC Register (http://www.appalachiantrail.org/site/c.jkLXJ8MQKtH/b.1558353/k.9194/The_Register.htm) isn't a chat room but had trail-wide info and articles about trail maintanance.

PATC (http://www.hypernews.org/HyperNews/get/trails/PATC.html)has a forum but I don't believe you have to be a PATC member to participate.

I did know about the Register, I'm looking for a more peer-to-peer rather than top-down way to share info.

I didn't know about the PATC forum, and did see the forum labeled "Trail Maintenance Volunteer Call", however the PATC forum looks general in nature with issues beyond trail maintenance, and the "Volunteer Call" talks about When not How.

So I'd be interested in any other thoughts.... thanks!

This forum would seem to be a place where such discussion could take place:

Well we could have those sorts of discussions - we just haven't had them generally. It wouldn't be a bad thing at all to add. I imagine we have a talent pool of maintainers here it just hasn't been something we talk about regularly. I know for a fact that there are a few maintainers here.

ki0eh, what trail are you working on, that you need to set a Carsonite post? I thought that you just drove them in with a post-driver.

There are about 60 of them on Mid State Trail in Tioga County. I suppose that's the only thing that came to mind when I was trying to express the scope of what I was thinking of. And I figured I'd start with this board as it seems maintainers are lurking around on this one.

As for my question: In PA, I found one needs the expensive Carsonite hole opener in addition to the expensive rectangular Carsonite post pounder as the fiberglass point quickly blunts itself on the PA rocks. Fortunately KTA bought both of them, I just hope to be out of Carsonite territory soon so I can get them out of the local MST gear cache and back into the vastly overcrowded garage of someone else's where the KTA tools are kept. :)
