Tampa here though currently in the process of a thru-hike. Have walked from Key West to 30 miles north of Lake Ochechobee (Basinger). I have taken a week off to allow an ankle injury to heal. Any volunteers to let me bum a shower and a ride to the store when I'm in your area? It would surely be appreciated!

I have been following your progress. You should note you are home and healing in your journal, so folks who are reading do not think you were eaten by a gator.

I will pick you up at the Firestation on 315 or at GoldHead SP. Take you where you need to go and then you can spend the night.

Hope the ankle is getting better.

Rob, it was quite dry up there this past September. It can change in a day afetr a really good storm, but with the *rainy season* coming to an end the chances of that happening before January get more remote.

I will also probably be in that area in January, heading NOBO (or WEBO at that point I guess). Hope to see you on the trai.

Tom

Tom, I had no idea there were so many trails this close to me, let alone hikers.

I grew up in the Northeast and loved hiking and backpacking. I had forgotten how much I loved it until a friend in VA recently got me curious about hiking again. My middle-aged, overweight body may revolt (yes, I have scoped out the overweight thread already :) ), but I went to Town Country and bought new boots today, so hopefully you will see me on the trail soon.

I live in East Orlando, with Christmas and Oveido being the closest trailheads I can see so far.

Anyone here belong to the Central Florida Chapter? I was wondering if they still met at Leu Gardens?

Jacksonville native living in north Georgia. I plan to be back down for spring break to hike the Ocala Trail portion. Will I have any problems with the "Rainbow People"?

I was told they had been "run out" of the camp ground (Farles Campground) that I stayed in. I set my tent up in the blocked of area for tent camping. Later that night a very large car arrived, knocked over one of the railroad ties, crusied around and unloaded some gear. I moved my gear out of the tent area and moved over by the campers and trailers. Don't know who it was as I started walking before day light.

That said - it's just like other trails AT etc. Where cars, trucks, 4-wheelers can go there will be more trash and you need to be more careful. I won't let it keep me off the trails.

Was just in Ocala and there are sights you'll see there that you won't see on other trails.

I guess I'd better quit lurking and join in. I'm in Orlando, a mom of 5 and work full time.

Last week, I finally got my courage up and mentioned my idea of hiking the Ocala National Forest portion of the Florida trail to my family. After an initial confused "huh, what?" reaction, my 3 boys who aren't working are on board. :sun Tentative date is early April. We've never backpacked before, just campground camping with tent or popup, with and without electricity (plus "Camp Grandma's Back Yard," LOL). I know we need to do lots of prep between now and then.

The boys are 10, 14 and 15, and we all suffer nature deficit disorder :-? and have way too many electronic entertainment devices. This will be a good for all of us. :D

Thanks for the info y'all have shared, there's lots of wisdom in this forum.

Hiked/ Camped a lot growing up in Vermont, but got away from it for way too long.
I havent hiked very much in FL, done a bit of "camping", but am really excited about meeting people who don't think camping is pitching a tent 20 feet from the car.

I looked up the Central FL chapter of the FTA website and will be attending my first meeting tomorrow.
Hope to meet some new people, and get introduced to some of the trails in FL.

I used to live in St. Augustine and sometimes wish I still did. I have family near Venice and in Jax. I'm giving serious thought to moving back to Florida in the next couple of years. I'd like to hike in the winter, but not in the snow and extreme cold of the Whites (where the best hiking is near me). I would miss the mountains, but would really enjoy those mild winters again. Too bad I wasn't into hiking when I lived in St. Augustine.

I've lived in St. Aug and Jax. for the last thirty years. I have hiked the FT in Ocala and Osceola. I just got off the AT last week. Bare Bare, thanks for the hot dogs at Dead Goat Gap in April.

I'm back in circulation, getting ready for a season of Florida hiking: kickoff next weekend in the Big Cypress Swamp. I have books to update, and trails to finish!

Calling out from Ocala, between the raindrops...

So are you thinking of thru-hiking or just picking up the pieces???

Have fun, you deserve it.

I'm hailing from Palatka. I do a lot of Hiking in the Ocala NF and the Palatka area. I'll be on the SC Foothills Trail at the end of the month.

Any experience with the Bardin Booger? They built a nice cabin for him at Iron Bridge in Etoniah State Forest.

IMHO that is the nicest shelter on the FT.

After Fay you might consider waiting a week or so until it dries or you'll do less walking and more slogging through swamp water.. The trail might look like this:

I fully expect it to be underwater. I'm headed down to Clyde Butcher's to lead the unsuspecting newbies past gators at the annual Muck-A-Bout, this will be my fifth year there as a volunteer swamp walk leader, and we slog the entire way. I *do* have the good sense not to be backpacking in Big Cypress after a rain like Fay!

Can't make it for the Muck-A-Bout but I'll be doing my own version of it at Apoxee Park in West Palm Beach tommorrow. It never ocurred to me before to pack a mask, snorkle & fins for a day hike, but after Fay anything's possible!

Navigator, I hope to see/meet you at the Muck-A-Bout on Sun. I'm volunteering at the FTA booth in the morn. I'm short, I hope the water isn't too deep or I will need a snorkle.

Wahoo - there's a good campground at Midway and also a commercial one near Ochopee (kinda tacky...it's home to Skunk Ape headquarters). For motels, the nearest would be in Everglades City. Everglades City Motel is clean and cheap, and the Rod & Gun Club is beautiful & historic but pricey (bring cash, they don't accept credit cards).

I like Monument Lake campground better than Midway. But this isn't a tent time of year, and no way would hubby even try it in summer, so we stay in Everglades City. There are three small motels, a B&B, the Rod & Gun Club (cash only), and Bobbie's, which has cabins for rent. The town usually fills up because of the Swamp Walks on Labor Day, but it's the closest place to stay outside of the campgrounds on the Tamiami Trail.

Phhht. :D

The family and I have gone tent camping a couple of times this summer. Granted, one of those was pretty hot and the tent was a sauna. We've got a group of friends doing the same thing at the end of Sept.

If I had more time I'd load up the kayaks and hit the water too...so many places, so little time...!

If I remember correctly Mud Bay was up around there. My husband use to scare the kids and tell them if we didn't get back through in time we would be stuck out there for 12 hours....

FT I am sure has alot to offer although I have not hiked much of the N. and DO NOT care about the S. due to the swamp as I work in that crap on a weekly bases. I can't see much fun in that at all. Torreya Hiking Trail I have been reading about and looks cool up to 300ft elev. change and alot of water short but nice.

Grand Island? That is like 10 mins from me Bump, I will be hiking the Suwannee section this coming weekend well I start on the 15th going to park and walk there and back I have till the 20th. I do believe it is 50 mi +/- from SRSP to Stephen Foster hat would make it about 16.5mi a day. One should be able to do such a thing, if anyone wants to join let me know. I will get there the night before so I can get a early start.

Yes Ind....when I lived in Summerfield I noticed you were in Mt. Dora. I want to do and WILL do that section hike one day. Not this week and I wouldnt be able to do that many miles in one day. If there was a section that I could hook up with you at, hike it with ya, then get off the trail, that would be great. I could do that.

Ind....check out Myfloridahikes.com....Sandy fixed it up real nice.
