Hi

I am planning a day hike on the AT from New York - I wondered what the best way to get from NYC to the Trail would be!?

Thanks in advance

Natalie

I assume you're looking for public transportation options:
Bus to Bear Mountain (http://www.coachusa.com/shortline/ss.details.asp?action=Lookup&c1=New+York&s1=NY&c2=Bear+Mountain&s2=NY&resultId=105940&order=&dayFilter=&scheduleChoice=&sitePageName=%2Fshortline%2Fss%2Etickets%2Easp&cbid=876061160986) - probably your best bet for just a day hike.
Train to Tuxedo (http://www.njtransit.com/pdf/rail/r0020.pdf) - close to but not on the AT
Train to Pawling (http://mta.info/mnr/html/planning/schedules/pdf/HAR_S_S_907.pdf) - again close to the AT but not on it. The link is the weekend schedule

Have you contacted the NY/NJ Trail Conference (http://www.nynjtc.org/)? They have organized hikes and can arrange transportation for you. Also try the Thendara Mountain Club (http://www.thendaramountainclub.org/).

Good luck and happy hiking.

Another option. I would take the 196 or 197 bus out of NYC to Warwick, NY. Ask the driver if he can drop you off where the AT crosses Rte 17A.

From there, walk south along Bearfort Ridge to Warwick Turnpike. That's a 10.5 mile hike with some great views and some challenging scrambles. You can keep going into Wawayanda State Park and call a taxi at the park office to take you down into West Milford where you can go back to NYC. To get to the park office, walk another .4 south to the shelter and take the short blue blazed side trail to the park office. That'll make your hike almost 11 miles.

That's what I'd do. Here's the bus schedule;

You could also take a NJ Transit train to Port Jervis and get a taxi to High Point State Park and wander around up there for an afternoon. That's a pretty part of the world.

If you look a little closer at the Train to Pawling schedule, you will find there are limited stops right on the Appalachian Trail just past Pawling.

The MTA Metro-North Railroad train from NYC Grand Central Station runs to the A.T. Railroad Station (one stop past Pawling), which is located 1/4 mile north of Hurd Corners, NY - 66 miles north of Grand Central Station on Saturdays and Sundays ONLY. The train ride is approximately 2 hrs (one way). I believe the one-way fare is $17.00 paid on the train, or $11.50 paid at the station. Trains leave GCS at 7:46am and 9:48am Saturday and Sunday ONLY. Return trains leave the A.T. Station at 2:44pm and 4:44pm Saturday and Sunday ONLY. Contact Metro North Railroad at 1-800-638-7646 (1-212-532-4900 within NYC) for more information.

Although this is a nice train ride, it kills 2 hours each way of your day. It DOES, however, give you a nice out and back hike from the A.T. Train Station either NOBO (toward Connecticut) or SOBO (toward Bear Mountain). You would have approx. 7 hours to play with for your out-n-back hike based on the above train schedule.

The weather for Sunday is forecast to be partly sunny, high of 49 - pleasant.

Just another option... Happy Trails!

I though the AT went from Geogia to Maine (or vice versa), not Wassaic to White Plains and New York.

Hi, Natalie

A couple of pages with lots of info about getting to the AT and other NYC-area trails via public transit:

http://www.nynjtc.org/trails/no-car.html

http://www.amc-ny.org/recreational-activities/transportationcodes.pdf

I don't know how often these pages are updated, so be sure to verify all schedules with the carriers themselves before departure.

This station is right on the trail. Hope it helps.More info on this 'station' (actually just a platform and bench) (http://as0.mta.info/mnr/stations/station_detail.cfm?key=167). It is on the Harlem (blue) line of MTA about 65 miles north of Grand Central
