Awhile back there was a post about what seasons people liked best - I remember many of us liked winter best. Winter has made an early arrival in Shenandoah National Park in the form of 4 inches of snow at the higher elevations! Check out my blog with pics here:

I was there all day yesterday on a scheduled trip for trail maintenance. Skyline Drive in the Central District was close in the morning. Kinda hard to clear the waterbars when some of them were hidden under the snow which also made them heavier.

Even with the snow, there still a lot of foliage on the trees. Makes for an interesting spectacle.

Cloudwalker - that's so cool that you have the same log! Differnt seasons, but the same log....that was cool that you were there when the laurel was in bloom - I never seem to get out when the laurel is in bloom (it's high pollen season...ugh)

I looked at your website and saw your kids playing on the same rock that I have a picture of too! :)

We got some snow on the Fundy Coast during our hike home yesterday, and we have some snow on the ground today. Love it. Our cheeks were pretty red when we got back and they still feel warm today. The wind and humidity chill you right to the bone, but if you can keep your fire burning and your toes and fingers and ears warm its not so bad. Later in the season, once things freeze up some more the chill is not so bad, but then the temperature can really drop and if the winds blowing also you'll surely know it. Wonderful time of year. Key thing is to get out and play in it as often as you can. We might not get so much of it in the future.

Here is a fun link I came across from yesteryear.
Mrs. Beavan must have posted sometime back in the 1800s. ;)

An excerpt:

A WINTER'S EVENING SKETCH,
WRITTEN IN NEW BRUNSWICK.

"Oh! there's a dream of early youth,
And it never comes again;
'Tis a vision of joy, and light, and truth,
That flits across the brain;
And love is the theme of that early dream,
So wild, so warm, so new.
And oft I ween, in our after-years,
That early dream we rue."
– Mrs. HEMANS.

Thanks for sharing TG. Your wonderful Pics and blog remind me of my many solo hikes last winter, hours of solitude without a sound, except the crunch-crunch-crunch of boots in the snow!

Winter is a great time to hike! The trail is so quiet and peaceful, and after a snow, everything has a new and different look.
