Great story! Rescues make the best buddies.
My boy was a homeless from Baltimore, went in and out of shelters for a little while. We ended up with him when he was only about 1 year 3 months old (guessing, no one knows).

plenty of photos of Phoebe in my gallery - but this is one of my favorites. My wife and I went out to dinner, leaving the youngest at home with one of the older boys. We got home to find the older boy in the basement watching t.v. and Scott and Phoebe on the couch in the den.

It's the only time I've ever seen her "cuddle" - and I think it was only because Scott was in "her" spot on the couch! (couch has since been replaced - and she isn't allowed on the replacement!)

He's a 31-lb Cockapoo (big for a Cockapoo) and I DID get him a smaller pack. I don't put much in the pack, just his food and emer water. The new pack has a handle over the back so I can easily lift him over areas he might have trouble.

Those handles are great, Hudson is 75 lbs and his life vest has one. Comes in handy a lot, I did break one but they replaced it and so far the 2nd one has held up fine.

Yes, that is a good picture. My favorite is on page 3, picture 103. Her pack is in the picture next to 103. When Winter and I were crossing the Presidentials on my thru we met a couple girls who had the job of painting white blazes on the trail. One of the girls painted a white blaze on winters pack and said, "all I have to do is follow the white blaze and I won't get lost." she was right. The pack hangs on the chair next to Winter's bed in the dining room. If anyone touches the pack Winter is up and ready to go hike. However, the arthritis in her hind end says that there will be no more hikes for Winter.

Yep, Arrow gets to carry his own gear but we're careful not to let his pack get heavy. It looks filled because his sleeping mat and coat are bulky. We carry the dog food and extra water.

Sometimes our "best friends" can save your life. I was injured early during my hike from GA to NH this year and I was immobilized in a draw somewhere near Cowrock Mountain in GA (both ankles were badly sprained). My dog helped me find water and was instrumental at helping me find my camp in the thick brush. He stayed under my hammock for 3 days of icy rain until I was able to hike back to Neels Gap. Trully a hero dog. Here he is perfectly comfortable in a cold wet environment.

Dog fun....get a big beach ball that is too big for the dog to bite. Toss the ball, dog jumps at ball, dog bounces ball back to you. It's a great game of catch. That works better than the soccer ball. Winter had better offense than I had defense and she kept eating the soccer balls.

Backpacking dogs, Tipi-living dogs, tent-eating dogs: These guys understood Nature and the Whole Point of Being Out. The big malamute was a mystic visitor who walked the tipi trails and would stop in to say hello. Maggot, the german shepherd, was my companion for many years up at the lodge. Backpacking Shunka is my current best friend, he knows how to pump nylon, loves the snow, doesn't snivel(much), and knows the difference between city life and the Great Outdoors.

Hey Rabbit! I ran into Red B and his dog, LP (Low Profile) just before Mahoosic Notch. LP is a dachshund as well. Red B says he (LP) had about 3,000 miles on those short little legs. I will admit, it was interesting to see LP decide which side of the rock had the shortest drop. Funny, the day before I saw a Great Dane.

Very nice - Australian shepherd? Thanks for posting.

My fav Trail dog is Rio (http://whiteblaze.net/forum/vbg/showimage.php?i=12505&catid=searchresults&searchid=12156), owned by Bonzo (http://whiteblaze.net/forum/vbg/showimage.php?i=12510&c=searchresults&searchid=12156). Met him in 03. This beautiful dog maintains a even temperament, which is always pleasant, especially when he's around hikers or the Trail. Bonzo takes him everywhere so I get to see him frequently.

My canine friend is a little black Pom named Bandito. He chases everything so I can't take him on the Trail, but I do take him camping. I keep him cut down like a little lab - he loves it.

Maybe we will meet Red B and Low Profile (great name for a weeny dog) on the trail someday. If TN can't decide which side of the rock to go on she will go over it. It gets tricky when she goes under a log across the trail and expects me to do the same. limbo

This is Cody, a German Shepard/Husky mix. We got him about 9 years ago. While we lived in an apartment, a lady was looking to get rid of her new puppy. She got the puppy, brought him home and the husband did not want him. The A$$ Hole tossed him in front of a truck to kill him. Cody lived through it, he was in a doggie wheel chair for a long while but as soon as he was fixed up, we got him!

Cody lived with us for 6 months before he would allow me around him, he would hide under the kitchen table and shake when I came home from work.
After about 8 months he trusted me, Tami and I were the only ones he would allow near him the rest of his life. No family members, No vets (total restraints, doctors and my self needed for his yearly shots) No one but the 2 of us. Cody did like all animals.

He loved the outdoors, the ocean and road trips.

He died early of Lymph node cancer, the bad thing about this cancer is it does not effect 95% of dogs at all untill they are at deaths door. He started getting sick about 2 weeks before his death, just scratching his side. The doctors thought it was a winter rash. By the time the figured it was Lymph Node cancer (about 3 days before he died), it was too late. He couldnt walk, eat or drink. In less then 2 weeks Cody went from a seemingly perfectly healthy dog to layn on his "death blanket". Sorry for the long post on the cancer part but just keep it in mind for your dog - it is hard to detect.

Cody died November 19, 2006 - R.I.P.

Salt Log Gap - Aldo and I just emerged from a hellish water run from the valley floor. It was rough - stinging nettles, thick brush, endless switch backs all for the reward of some much needed water. Even the dog was twisted out of shape by the time we made it to the trail. But we bounced back quickly.

This is Rip at 5 months heading up to the AT from Sky Meadows, Delaplane, VA.

First pic was to show off his pack which he's very proud of.

Second pic is us working on down-stay with a distraction further up the trail.

Third one, he plopped his little butt down on the log next to me at lunch and I couldn't resist the photo op.

No weight in the pack, at that point it was just bulk (empty soda bottles or tennis balls or plastic bags, etc.) so he'd get used to it at an early age.

He only has two speeds... Couch and Hike. His Mom was adopted by some kids on a hike. She hiked for a month with them before they decided to take her to the vet for "worms". Six worms that were born behind my couch!

He started hiking when he was about 10 months old and has hiked the sections of the AT around Erwin more than any hiker I know... and he loves every section as much the 100th time as he did the first. He hikes with people he only met hours before and he takes his job very seriously! He has never lost a hiker yet! But I took him to Big South Fork on a hike and he got really upset and had a hard time keeping the trail... NO WHITE BLAZES!!

I don't know if this will work because I've not tried this before and I tend to be somewhat computer illiterate, but I'll try to upload a picture of "my most excellent lead dog" Rascal, on his last hike from Eckville to the Allentown shelter in Pa. Yes it is...was (Rascal died over 5 years ago). Huskies CAN have trouble in warmer weather, but if you make sure to take frequent rest stops, don't hike in the hottest part of the day, and have plenty of water, they can have fun without any serious problems. That photo was taken between Eckville and the Allentown shelter, at the side trail to Dan's Spring. It was Rascal's last hike with me...now he hikes with God.

If you can see what it's like by hearing and reading stories, imagine how much stronger it is to actually experience it.

Being able to actually share and enjoy my favorite activities with my dogs (only have one at the moment but have had several over the years) brings me so much joy. I love my cats but I don't have the same feelings/emotions for them that I do any dog I've ever owned partly because I don't have the same experiences with them.

Now, anyone who's not a pet person will probably think I'm nuts by that statement! Ha!

I met Red B and LP at Miss Janet's house. Hiked a bit with them and that dachshund can hike!! BTW LP stands for Low Profile, cute!

If you were talking to me, the upper photo was taken near Reading, Pa. The lower photo was take a few miles from the Rausch Gap shelter (on State Game lands where we frequently train because the snow stays in that valley for WEEKS after it's melted elsewhere).

And no, you can't have one for use on the AT - the wheels on the carts are too small to roll over the rocks, and the sleds need WAY to much room to turn!!

Great pics of some really nice trail dogs.

I don't post often here but this thread brought back some great memories. My trail dog was named Pic (Piccolo). He wandered up to us back in 1986 on a week-long hike around Linville Gorge (NC) His wandering ways (off trail) challenged us for years.

He loved to hike and went on many multi-day hikes on the AT in NC, VA & VT. Even though he weighed in at a bulky 11 lbs., he was always good for a 10 mile day and loved it as much as we did.

Pic passed away a few years ago after a life of 18 1/2 years. IMO, his longevity was due in large part to lots of regular exercise and a love for the trail. I miss him dearly but he will be central in my thoughts as I NOBO on my thru attempt starting in March.

Thanks to all for bringing back wonderful memories. A dog that loves the trail is a special creature.

Crabby Appleton: Thanks for sharing with us your memories and experiences. It sounds like your journey with Pic was a significant part of your life history. It is amazing that something as "simple" as a little dog can enrich our life and pull something out of us that helps us to appreciate and value life in a much more significant way.

I plan to start hiking with Montana as soon as I get some time, mostly just working on my new house and trying to get her basics learned. Hopefully will start day hiking with her in a few weeks. Mostly now she just has fun chasing our two cats. I am not sure if I will put a pack on her when she is older or not. My old lab mix used to carry a small pack with a small amount of food, some treats, and a collapsible water dish, but I mostly carried his stuff. I am looking forward to getting her out, she already does really good on a leash in our neighborhood. Plus it will be great to get her used to new locations. She is going to be wonderfull.

Tipi Walter

Bring a leash, not for use while hiking but when set up in camp. Tie out the dog by the tent so when other hikers pass thru he may bark but he won't CHASE.

Get a decent dogpack since you do not want to hump his food, too. My dog can carry enough food for 12-15 days max, so don't worry about the weight. (Depends on dog size, etc)

Make sure the dog is well controlled. He may get protective of you specially when you set up camp. That being said a new environment can be an emotional shock that could make him more vocal. Until you know that he's adpted to the trail ... you may want to setup camp away from shelters (which I do a majority of the time). Start training hikes with the dog and several overnighters before you head out. There are plenty of threads on this site regarding backpacking with your pooch. Good luck. Here's the top of the Dog backpacking thread: http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=439

You do know you can't take him in the Smokies and Baxter right? You'll have to make other arrangements for him while going through.

emmyo22 I dont think the dogs size will make much of a difference. But the breed will, huskies are working dogs, which is good, but they also have a high prey drive and they tend to roam, even huskies trained off leash can take off unexpectedly, and run for hours and end up 3 states away.

also remember he's a young dog, so take it slow, soft ground wont be too hard on his joints but pushing him too much can.

Ah, yes - the husky mix. The "husky" part will want to roam - possibly as many as 3 counties over! Let's hope that the "mix" part wanders less. Better to keep the dog leashed at all times than to lose it in unfamilar territory.:-?

Get the dog used to the bowls, food and equipment that he'll be using - do this well before the trip begins. At one year of age, he's not done growing yet - DO NOT make him carry anything, or you could permanently damage his joints. Start out slow - let him rest if he looks tired.

Small meals throughout the day work better at keeping his eneregy levels from depleting (much better than one or two bigger meals). He will have to consume more calories, just like his people, to do the miles. Make sure he gets enough protein so he doesn't lose muscle mass. Add some oil or other fats to his regular food. :D

How will you dry him off after hiking all day through the rain? (Figure this one out BEFORE he dries himself off on your sleeping bag!)

Finally, realize that, no matter how well-behaved he is, there will be some folks out there who just don't think that dogs belong on the trail. You will not change their opinion - just politely work around these folks.

Enjoy the trip, but remember to keep one eye always on the dog!

Sorry about my drift, SunnyWalker. How about a picture or two, to make up for it?

The first pic is of my original Sibrian Husky, Bandit, and his very young partner, Rascal, in 1989. Bandit was special. We hiked together for almost 12 years. He did all of the AT in MD, some of VA, most of PA, and most of VT.

The second pic is of the current crop of Siberians (all descended from Bandit), including Lightning (on my lap), her sisters Flame (black and white) and Starfire (the other red and white in the box), and their Mom Tara (at the bottom of the picture). After years of having too many dogs to be able to hike with, I've started taking Lightning on overnight trips - although I'm not really sure that she enjoys it...even though she enjoys being with me!

kinda looks like she had doggles on :-?

Yep, them's doggles. A bug or a rock in the eye @ 60 mph can blind a dog. Damn I miss her.

Just an aside (gotta love the dog with headlamp and knife, LOL!) but how do you all load such big pictures?? If I try and load anything but quite a small shot I just get error messages.

My vet’s hot button is dog owners who let their dogs ride in the car with their head out the window. I hadn't given it much of a thought until he went off on a tirade about it. Then I took Winter for a walk in the desert in southern CA and she came back with panus. I give her the medine but if I don't it comes back.

Ok Superman, what IS "panus"? (I am almost afraid to ask)
Panus is a condition of the eyes. A leathery coating grows from the outside in until the dog goes blind. There used to be no cure for it but now there is a combination of medicines that make it go into remission. Bright sun can bring it on and German Shepherds are prone to it but others can also get it. It would have been good to know about this before we hiked the desert part of the PCT. It's good to have a good vet and it's good to make the vet understand where your dog is going to be. It's one thing to have the vet deal with a couch potato dog and another to deal with a dog that travels off the beaten path.

post your photo into the WB photo gallery. Click on it so you see it full size. Right click on the photo and copy it. Paste it into the Message section of your post.

If you copy from the smaller picture, it ends up as a thumbnail.

Phoebe's heaviest pack has been about 12 lbs. That was several years ago. Now that she's older (7!), I limit her pack weight to 5 - 7 lbs..... I'm not saying this would be appropriate for your boxers. She is a working dog - the Siberian Husky Association of America indicates up to 30% of body weight is appropriate for huskies. I'd check with the American Boxer Association to see if they have recommendations:

http://www.americanboxerclub.org/

by the way - great pics! beautiful dogs!

Thanks guys...yeah they do pretty well in cool/cold weather hiking. Their pads wear pretty bad when it's hot, and in june the the male (Romeo) wore every single one of his pads off! He burnt them on the parking lot before we even began. That was more my fault than anything (i felt terrible) but it taught me a lesson.

He is 100lbs, and she is 50-60. So ~7lbs seems fair for her. He is 6+yrs, so I would say 10lbs is good for any length of time. If it is cooler and we are only going 1-2miles, then i could see 15-20lbs for him. He loves to work and be useful! For 4+ miles, the 15% mark scares me the least.

The main reason I asked, though, is that I noticed some of your dogs' packs are stuffed to the brim.

I usually have my Aussies carry about 10% of their weight. Boxers are tanks, and might be able to carry a bit more. You should really just experiment and see what your dogs are comfortable with. You know them the best, so look for signs that they are being a bit slower than usual or struggling to carry the weight. They might be able to carry a little more or less than 10%- read your dogs' body language to learn the weight that they are comfortable with.
My dogs are working dogs, and are all muscle. My 2 y/o girl, Lily, looks like she is about 30 pounds, but is a healthy 48. Her size means that her pack size is a small, so 5 pounds looks like it is stuffed. I also thrown their little pack towels in their packs. That takes up a bit of room, but doesn't add much weight.

Aussie922
10-14-2008, 22:37
I forgot to add, the majority of genetic problems that boxers generally experience are heart-related, but they can also be affected by intervertebral disk disease, which is damage to the disks in between the vertebrae of the spine, and hip dysplasia. Your dogs seem healthy and this shouldn't be a concern now, but this is something that you might want to keep in the back of your mind as they get older. Obviously they wouldn't be able to carry a pack if this became a problem. Other than that, though, there isn't anything boxer-specific that you should be concerned about.
