Missed that. My bad. Admins can collapse this thread into that one. Just knew it was being celebrated today.

Lone Wolf already started a thread for Veterans Day (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=29525), my fellow veteran.

But there's an excellent article HERE (http://www.philly.com/philly/news/homepage/20071111_Honoring_those_who_served_-_a_road_warrior.html) about another veteran, that one of my fellow Patriot Guard Riders (http://www.patriotguard.org/) forwarded to me...about one of our fellow Patriot Guard Riders.

Are those the guys who started the anti-funeral protest? No, this group shields families from having to see the despicable people who protest at military funerals - and from what I've heard gives some pretty convincing encouragement to such protesters to leave the area. ;)

I join others in thanking all the veterans - living and dead - for their service and sacrifices --- and all the families of veterans and those currently serving for their support and sacrifices.

Your question is worded a bit vaguely, but to clarify...the Patriot Guard Riders were originally formed to interpose themselves between grieving families and the scumbags from the Westboro Baptist "church" who had been protesting at the funerals of deceased military folks. I cannot think of words bad enough to convey my feelings toward said "church" members...

I am proud to live in a state that has restrictions on protesting funerals, especially those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

So do I, but I have a feeling that it will be in the appeals courts for a long time, and that it might end up in the United States Supreme Court, as a 1st Amendment question. I personally do not think the freedom of speech extends that far, and neither did the jury in this case.

(by the way, I have yet to hear anyone call this lawsuit "frivolous" other than the defendants).

I hope everyone is having a great Holiday today, and that all of you veterans are taking it easy and being good to yourself. I just returned from the Veteran's Day parade here in Bangor, and I have to say it was very emotional. Anyway, thanks to all of you!

Driving through the city of Dahlonega, Ga., on the way to Neels Gap, I saw the roads fully lined with named wooden posts with American Flags. It was a wake up that I wouldn't be able to enjoy the freedom of a hike if it weren't for the proud men and women of our Armed Forces.

I have the greatest respect for those whom have served our country past and present. Due to these folks we have rights that no one else have. I don't have any idea of what it is like to "Not" have these rights and I don't want to find out.
Thankyou vets and present day servicemen and wemon. Hats off to you.

Thank you so much to all who serve and have served. I looked over this post a number of times, and kept thinking that my little "thank you" wouldn't add anything, then I grew afraid that not saying anything says more, mostly bad or ungrateful... so thank you.

I got this in my email this AM. It seems to be in keeping with the theme of this thread - to honor those who defend and protect us - and to advance an excellent idea brought out by Jack Tarlin in another thread on this subject - that it is a shame that we only honor our soldiers one day per year.
When you are making out your Christmas card
list this year, please include the following address to send a card to:

Address Removed (see following posts for why) Having survived an auto accident that landed me in rehab and a wheelchair for what seemed like for-tweedling-ever, I can assure you that getting unexpected cards, letters and token gifts (even from strangers) means a lot to a person in this situation.

While that sounds like a great idea:
http://urbanlegends.about.com/od/government/a/cards_soldiers.htm

One of the consequences of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 is that the U.S. Postal Service will no longer deliver mail addressed to "Any Service Member," "A Recovering American Soldier," or any similar generic addressee. This is to protect the safety of American servicemen and women. Likewise, according to a statement (http://www.wramc.amedd.army.mil/Lists/WRNews/DispForm.aspx?Id=25&) dated November 8, 2007, the Walter Reed Army Medical Center will not accept such mail at its facility (though mail addressed to specific individuals will still go through).
The Army recommends instead making donations to one of the nonprofit organizations dedicated to supporting the troops and their families listed at www.americasupportsyou.mil (http://urbanlegends.about.com/od/government/a/www.americasupportsyou.mil), or to the American Red Cross (http://www.redcross.org/services/afes/0,1082,0_321_,00.html). :(

Thanks for the updated info, Camojack. It never even occurred to me that security might be an issue, but it certainly makes sense. I wonder if there is any way to get the names of soldiers in the rehab unit at Walter Reed? I kind of doubt it in this age of HIPPA and Homeland Security, but I sure would like to be able to send a bit 'o cheer and hope to these guys and gals.- and I may have found a way

Although the Walter Reed Army Medical Center is not accepting holiday cards for recovering soldiers, the American Red Cross has said that small gifts may be sent to patients in that facility through them: The Walter Reed Army Medical Center is ONLY accepting phone cards, CDs, individual small packets of candy, things like that; which they will distribute among the soldiers (as they have a lot of in and out patients). They are not accepting Holiday Cards, as they don't have the human resources to distribute them.

You may send your packets to:

Walter Reed Army Medical Center
6900 Georgia Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20307-5000

No problem. It would be a pointless waste of time, effort and resources to send cards that won't be delivered.

There are a number of organizations that you can contribute to that will be more effective, like the USO (http://www.uso.org/), Wounded Warrior Project (http://woundedwarrior.org/), Paralyzed Veterans of America (http://www.pva.org/site/PageServer) and the Blinded Veterans Association (http://www.bva.org/).

Those are the ones I give to, anyway...
