I've got a friend that recently got bit by the hiking bug and is looking for help with gear.
Does anybody know of a good outfitter in the San Francisco area? She just moved there and I don't know a thing about San Fran. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Western Mountaineering is in San Jose, right down the 101. What better place to start??

There was an outfitter on Market St. which I first went to 30 years ago. It used to be called GMS Sales (something like that) and I visited it again within the last 5 years but now it's apparently under new management. Here's a link.
