We (my wife and I) want to provide shelter for our new hiking companion, and currently we have a Tarptent Double Rainbow and a Black Diamond Skylight. Any thoughts on modifying, adding to, or getting another configuration all together to allow shelter for our new Chesapeake Bay Retreiver, Bella? Also, I don't think the wife will want her in the same tent with us, due to fear of ticks.

Once my dog out grew sharing my hammock, I bought him one of these.

I'm thinking it wouldn't be too hard to make a homemade addition to provide an enclosure for your dog that would fit the Rainbow when it was deployed as in this pic from SHire's web site:

That thing weighs more than my tent! But it is an option to consider. Thanks!

Ticks are only a concern until your get a couple of good freezes. I did a majority of the trail and the tick issue was resolved with Frontline Advantage. They actually sell a Doggie type tent at REI for something like $40 bucks. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is actually a pretty tough dog when it comes to the elements. They're bred for cold, wet conditions. Unless you're doing some winter hiking ... that dog will be fine under a tarp. IMHO.

I use Frontline and never saw a tic on my dog I slao sprayed her backpacks and collar heavily with Deet. I wish I could have found something as good for me.

Thanks. I'll keep the treatment in mind and try to talk my wife into letting her in the tent with us...a thought on the freeze theory....i was sitting against a tree in late Jan. in the woods and got up, and there were a bunch of ticks all over my shirT! Guess i was in the wrong place. They may not be very active after the freeze, but i found out they are still around. I'm hoping to keep our CBR completely out of the elements, regardless of the CBR's ability to take the elements.

use frontline, it will get rid of fleas and ticks, well the ticks might jump on your dog, but won't bite your dog, instead they'll jump on you, make regular tick checks and tick checks before you go to bed.
a homemade addition sounds like the best choice, dog doesn't need protection from bugs.

It doesn't weight anything important if you're not carrying it, right? Just figure a good way to lash it onto your pup's pack! :D

I would think a vestibule extension on your tent would be best, I'm sure your dog will want to be near you. Get him a closed cell pad to sleep on (he can carry it).

As for ticks, sulpher is the best thing for them, not DEET. You can buy flours of sulphur at a large pharmacy in a one pound box. For use on humans I mix mine with baby powder 50/50 and carry it in a travel sized baby powder shaker bottle. Ticks and chiggers aren't insects, they are arachnids, if you look at a bottle of Chigg-Away you'll see the primary ingredient is sulphur.

My wife and I often hike with our 80 pound shephard. We've found a Tarptent Rainshadow to be good for the 3 of us. The dog sleeps down between us at the foot end of the tent. Here he is with my wife and I
