I have narrowed my choices of tents to the Sierra Designs Iota and the MSR Hubba. What are your takes on them both?

Hey Jarhead!
I personally wouldn't use either one. For me, the Iota is too heavy and the Hubba is too narrow. I used the Iota for a week long demo and I found it to be heavy at 3lbs 12oz, although I like the side entry. I got inside of a Hubba for just a couple of minutes at an outfitter and I thought it was too narrow for my liking; however, I did like the head room in the Hubba. Just my opinion:D

MSR is updating the Hubba in 2008, so you might want to wait. The tents will weigh less and the flys will change to a dark yellow color. MSR is also adding a HP version with less mesh and more fabric for protection.

Well how 'bout this? Everybody state your opinion and then the tent that you use personally and the pros and cons of your tent. That will SURELY spread some info for everybody!!!

Jarhead....I use the Big Agnes SL1 for the following reasons....it weighs less than 3lbs, easy to set-up, my fat azz fits good in it, and it would make my late aunt Agnes proud!!:banana

MSR micro Zoid 2lbs 13oz packed fast and light pitch just the foot-print and the fly 1lbs 10oz vestibule on rain fly has enough room to store my pack and my boots over night not a lot of extra room but plenty for a good nights sleep after a hard day on the trail. This tent is well made and has been through some hard use and is still like brand new ,very light and functional.

Not to badmouth the microzoid but look at a Mountain Hardwear Waypoint I just for contrast. Single wall, very nice venting, no vestibule. May be hard to find locally but a very light alternative. For my money, I'd go for the waypoint 2 just for the extra room to keep my gear inside the tent.

Why spend so much money? I use this tent when backpacking -

It has plenty of room, including more headroom than many solo tents - and you can get the weight to around 3 pounds by ditching the storage bag it comes in and using a stuff sack.
I honestly don't understand spending big bucks for a tent. I can buy a new one of these each trip if I have too for what you might spend on a Hubba. And the Hubba is Very narrow.

Ever consider a hammock?
What's the point of a tent rather than a tarp?
Staying dry in hard rain, snakes and other critters, warmth in cold weather (my tent knocks 15-20 degrees off the outside temp! ;)
Oh, forgot . . . mosquitos! :)
