What does the term "Jacobs Ladder" have to do with the AT? And I'm not talking about a trail named this.

Jacobs Ladder was a movie.

The character that played George Costanza in Seinfeld was in the movie.

George Costanza was an aquaintance of the character Newman in Seinfeld.

I met the character Newman in the Atlanta airport last year.

I hike on the AT.

Easy. But how did you know?

Hot Springs interned officers and crew from German merchant vessels that were docked at US ports during the start of WWI. I think they were officially called "enemy aliens" and not POW's.

Which trail town was home to German POW's?

It was Hot Springs. When the Germans were released, they liked it so much there that many of them stayed. Let's see, a choice between gorgeous Hot Springs, or war torn Germany. I'd have stayed too. Shoot, I wish I could stay there now LOL.

Dakota Dan-"What does the term "Jacobs Ladder" have to do with the AT? And I'm not talking about a trail named this."For one, Jacobs Ladder (http://www.hikethewhites.com/photos/old/jacob.jpg) is the name of the trestle on the Cog tracks you can see from the A.T. The name comes from the Biblical reference (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacob's_Ladder_(Bible)) and how some people view all the 'hills' on the A.T...:D

Bingo.... the Cog Railway was what I was looking for.

And as most know, a trail by the same name adjoins the AT. But, I excluded the trail as part of the answer.

I was also correct about the German POW's. I Googled it after I saw the other answers,(which may also be correct, didn't check). A group of German Submarine POW's where kept at or near Furnace Grove.

Sasquatch2014 and DawnTreader are correct on the last section being south of Sugarloaf.

"The ridge between Spaulding and Sugarloaf Mountains was the last section of the Appalachian Trail to be cleared. When a CCC crew blazed this section of trail in 1937, it completed the more than 2,000 mile Appalachian Trail from Maine to Georgia."

It used to be Little Wolf Creek (during high water) near Bastian, VA before they permanently relocated the trail to the former blue-blazed high water route this past hiking season.
I loved that secluded stream valley.

Brushy Sage
12-05-2007, 19:44
Yes, the valley along the stream was most pleasant. Weren't there about five fording crossings? I made it across on rocks until the last one, when one foot slipped and hit bottom -- and all my dry-footed pride went down with it.

warren doyle
12-05-2007, 19:57
Various estimates had from 11-14 crossings of Liittle Wolf Creek when it first opened (around 1980). There was a relocation eliminating two fords near where Little Wolf Creek floed into Laurel Creek several years ago. During low water, these were the two fords that proved a little bit trickier to navigate by dry-footed northbounders.

Did you mean to say During HIGH water?

The Old Fhart

Warren is right for once that Wolf Creek had the most fords. For a good account of what the crossings could be like, read Model T's "Walking on the Happy Side of Misery", pages 244-251. Great story. What was the bypass is a really nice section of trail, especially compared to what was down low.
