While searching for other miscellaney stuff today, I stumbled across a U of Pennslyvania paper (60+ pages) submitted for their Masters.

I skimmed thru it and found it very interesting. Several hikers were also mentioned in it... Kerosene, Hammock Hanger and others..

Interesting that I was the section hiker to comment on the crowds during peak hiking season, when I typically like to hike after Labor Day to avoid some of the crowds.

Not a bad paper, and interesting for someone who is still learning about the AT its history.

One of my old friends thesis was entitled "How far a lizard can jump from a pole". He was awarded a masters in physics for it.

The thesis is an excellent treatment of questions like how to allow everyone to use the trail while limiting the environmental impact. It considers a number of remedies and gives the pros and cons of each. I enjoyed it.

What was your thesis on?

i cant believe people actually get degrees with stuff like this...I think the focus is on conducting research and analysis of data, and encouraging original thinking, rather than trying to restrict a project to something the will fit mainstream thinking. The students will learn the latter very quickly once in the "real" world, and will be beaten into "sheeple" submission.

It was a Masters in "Environmental Studies" what more do you want?

This paper is by Julia DeGagne - a 2006 thru-hiker. Anyone know if she's a member here?

orthopaedics engineering

That might actually have some useful application for some AT hikers. Beats mine: "Whether Product Liability in the Restatement of Torts Should Apply to Military Aircraft". I suppose an F-16 COULD fall out of the sky onto a AT hiker. That might then leave someone in need of some good orthopaedics engineering.

I did a review to determine whether the literature could support a conclusion on whether round or rectangular septic tanks are better. The answer, of course, is that more research is needed. I'm so glad I escaped academia...
