OK,

That time of the year when the kinfolk start asking me what I want for Christmas. To be honest, I got what I need, or I go buy it. But that doesn't really satisfy them.

Are there a few things that you have on your Christmas list? I am a section hiker, have a couple of good backpacks and a couple of good sleeping bags, have most of the stuff I can imagine using, have tons of maps . . . Anything else?

I usually ask for the things that wear out -- socks and boots / trail runners (I go find what I want and ask for the specific size and item). I also get new books, updated maps and gift cards for my favorite on-line outfitters.

Ask for a day to be left alone. A day to sleep late, sit in the corner with a good book and be able to leave the phone off the hook without anyone worrying.

I know what you mean. The things I need this year are things I need to get for myself - like a new pack to replace my worn ULA or boots/shoes. I don't want anything that will add weight to my pack or that might not fit.

But there are a lot of things that people who don't know a lot about hiking can still get for you: i.e. fleece jacket or vest, long underwear (Patagonia!), a water filter (tell them which), fleece, polypro or wool hat/gloves, balaclavas (either fleece or a light polypro), zip off hiking pants, books or videos on hiking, hiking shirts, socks, magazine subscription (Backpacker, Outdoor, National Geographic Adventure . . . )
