View Full Version : Coolest Fire Starter
OK this is not too portable, but it is cool to play with. I have a friend that owns a TV repair shop, he gave me the front lens out of a dead 46-inch projection TV. This thing will melt blacktop; we had the blacktop outside of his shop bubbling in less then a min. No need for tinder to start a fire, just put on your welding glasses and focus the beam on the piece of wood and it lights on fire almost instantly. It has no practical use as it’s almost 50-inches square, but it’s a ball to play with. It’s amazing how much power is in a few sq. ft. of sunlight.
You would think by now we would be doing more with solar power?

Hand sanitizer works great for starting fires. Everything in your pack should have at least 2 purposes if possible.

Yeah, nobody thought it was funny the last time I did it on another thread. People are very serious about their firestarting conversations.
The very best firestarter I've ever seen was back when I was crewing for some hot air balloonists. Those folks start very early and wind up their day by mid morning, when the turbulence builds up.
One morning after the balloon was packed away, they set up the barbeque. They poured most of a bag of briquettes on the concrete, and went and got the burners from the balloon. They connected the burners to the propane, aimed it at the briquettes, warned "firing!" and lit it off. There was a mighty whoosh, and in about three seconds every briquette was perfect. The grill went on immediately, the burgers next, champagne was poured....
I've got to admit I was seriously impressed.

That's cool. No, this is cool (http://youtube.com/watch?v=UjPxDOEdsX8). It's one way to keep frost from forming on the outside of a bucket full of liquid oxygen.
And remember, boys and girls, don't ever try this at home.
Always try stuff like this at someone else's home.

It's a dude with a bucket of liquid oxygen on a long board lighting barbecue fires to the applause of his brain dead friends. It gets a 1 (generous) on the amusing scale.

Definitely! Can't get used to the switch from Thick Red Hair. Why the change? I need to know because I can't bear the vision anymore of you with a big (knee-length) gaiter velcroed to your head.
