Well, there's always putting it in a plain black trash bag. Lightweight and multi-use!;)
Seriously, it works pretty well.

I always carry about 3 large plastic wastebags in the bottom of my pack, for a variety of reasons--this being one of them.

Used to use a SD Lightyear, and there simply wasn't room for a pack inside that tent. My routine was to pop my rain cover over the pack before calling it a night.

put it on a rock above ground and put your backpack rain cover over it or put it in a trashbag as the other alternative.....do both if your really worried..

Ditto on both accounts, only my tent is a Eureka.

If I'm hammocking or for some other reason can't bring my pack into my tent, I tie it to a tree. It's probably an illusion, but it seems less likely to attract varmits that way.

Yup. That's where mine goes on those nights. Haven't had a varmint problem yet.

At night, my pack always stays outside my one person tent. I lean it up against a tree and put the pack cover over it.

I alway put the pack cover on it, and hang it on a tree

Mine went inside, using it as part of the padding under foot, instead of carrying a full length pad...

Being a relative newbie to the trail, this is what works for me. I found that the plastic ventilator covers we have at the hospital I work in are excellent to use for large waterproofing needs. I put one in my pack as a liner and keep one to place my pack in at night while I sleep. The bag is pretty large, so I just put the pack in it, roll it over and instant dry pack.

I always put my pack in my tent with me. Usually I put it at my feet so if i want to prop up my feet I can. I've never had a problem with varments, has anyone else?:-?

I sleep in a bivysac on a 28"x72" blue foam pad under a 4'x8' poncho tarp. The bag is usually right above my head or if there is a tree there, off to the side somewhat in a place to help block the wind. It is usually quite empty my the time I am camped though. Kelly Kettle and other cooking stuff are rainworthy, so they are right there where I want to make breakfast. Any wet clothes are hanging to dry, or another rinse cycle. The bag itself is pretty rainworthy also. What I want to keep dry I am either wearing or it is in a small bag in with me, or being used as a pillow, or off to the side someplace.

In order of preference - All of them I've done with good results at one time or another:
1) In my tent - I mostly hike solo with a 2-3 man tent for that reason
2) Shelter - only stay in them when it's raining cats n dogs! Hang pack on a nail.
3) Outside tent with Gregory pack cover (made for my pack) securely covering pack and velcro latched down to it. Pack stays perfectly dry.

===================================

I pull my pack cover on and lay the pack down flat ...up off the ground on a rock if possible.

i either hang it off my hammock's ridgeline, then out through the velcro slit, still off the ground, or roll it up (it's a 20oz GoLite Gust) under my knees to keep them from hyper-extending.

If not in tent, then in a large green garbage bag.
