I found this picture a month or so ago but forgot to label where it is and now I can't find the link that led to it. Can someone identify this shelter and the body of water it overlooks? Looking for a section hike and this has my attention.

Thanks,

Flying Eagle

That is the Hudson River. So the shelter is West Mountain. Take it to the bank.

This shelter is labeled correctly as West Mt Shelter. However, I don't think the link proves anything. Isn't it just the original picture reposted?

This shelter is very far off the trail and most skip it. I highly recommend spending the night. The night views of New York are great.

In reading his post, he was looking for the original link and for help in identifying the shelter. The shelter was identified, and the above posted link was the original link, as posted by Refereeman, complete with his stellar description of the shelter and its' surroundings.

Not Fingerboard and not O'Brien. West Mtn. fits the bill.

I've been to all of the NY shelters multiple times, in every season, over numerous years, and I have to agree with those who say it's West Mountain.

West Mtn. shelter near Bear Mtn., N.Y.

I stayed a night there last year, and took my time leaving the next morning, so got a good look at it.

Thank you to all who jumped in on this identification. Now to look over the map and decide how much of this section to squeeze into five days definately planning an afternoon arrival and over night at West Mountain Shelter.

Absolutely not. Fingerboard has no view of the Hudson (or any other body of water.)

That is the shelter on West Mountain, Harriman State Park, N.Y.
In the background is the Hudson River.

I wouldn't know; I have a ".2 mile rule". If a shelter is more than .2 off the trail I don't go.

I've heard others say that and never quite understood it. What's 0.2 if you've already done 15? :-?

Um, 1.3%? Is that right? Do I get a prize?

I can't explain it, but having decided to walk, voluntarily, 2,175 miles, I was positively allergic to taking any extra steps.

I agree that it is a bit more off the trail than others but if the weather is good you get great views. I have some photos from the front of the shelter looking down on the Hudson and out to the NYC skyline that I posted. The town you look down on from here on the near bank is Haverstraw NY and the far bank is Ossining and I belive you may also be able to to see Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant. I belive that the fireplaces in this shelter are still active but the area gets a lot of use so its pretty picked over for squaw wood.

On a clear night you can see the lights of the New York City skyline. On other nights you'll be kept awake by the sounds of gun fire:eek: , which I assume, is from either West Point or Camp Smith.

This shelter may be in disrepair camped near there LY while on the Ramapo/Bear Mtn Trail and the floor had a hole in it (probably firewood) and the roof leaks but check with NY/NJ ATC as I am not positive.

Just for fun, looked it up. For comparison, here's Fingerboard (http://whiteblaze.net/forum/vbg/files/6/5/4/7/fingerboard_shelter.jpg). Bigger rocks, one chimney.

It's the view that gives it away -- and eliminates O'Brien and Fingerboard as contenders. O'Brien and Fingerboard are both right on the trail, pretty much. Neither one has much of a view. I walked past West Mtn. shelter 'cuz it's off a side trail, it was mid-day, and I was headed for Fingerboard that night. From my memory of that day's hike I can easily picture that gorgeous view from West Mtn. shelter. Sorry I missed it!

I can say having just spent the night at the Fingerboard shelter right before Thanksgiving that it has infact two Chimney. Willaim Brine has one chimney and the fireplace in that one is now sealed off anyway.

If I do it again, odds are I'd do it similiarly in some parts, but quite differently in others. I'd want to do it in under 5 months, for one thing. For another, I'd stay in shelters considerably less, hiking many days to the end my strength or daylight, and tenting there. I might not cook that next time, either, if I can figure out a way to get enough vegetables into me...

Camped at W. Mtn. Shel in Oct one year and you can see the lights from Giants Stadium in the Meadowlands. Great spot! BTW I like to think of HSP as my "home court".

I try to help with my posts on subjects I think I may know more about than some readers, or at least have had a thought on a subject that some here have not had.

Out of curiosity, which post of mine on thru-hiking advice did you think highly of? The "not-sure-if-she's-even-really-going-to-thruhike" Georgia Girl thread, where I listed some winter gear and direction-finding maps?

It was 42 on this thread. I am thinking like you that if I were to thruhike the AT I would not plan to stop at shelters, but go ahead and put in some longer days and plan on tenting. I would also try to get an early start in the morning.
