CHECK OUT THE NEW SCHEDULE A FEW POST ABOVE!

The plans are set for the new york trip.
Heading north as River1 mention, he seems to know the area so we will go North on his advice.

Everyone Just meet at the starting point, we will drop some vehicles at that point and then eat at the Greasy Spoon. After that we will head to the Southern trail head - following River1 since he knows the way - and start the hike from that pint.

SO the NY trip is set!

Any questions, please ask now.

How did you get your trailname "wrongway"?

NY trip, just a guess, I am looking at Wingfoots book for these numbers and camping points. Need to double check first.

Day one, State line to Wildcat Shelter = 7miles
Day two, Wildcat Shelter to Arden Mtn? = 9 miles
Day three, Arden Mtn to Arden Valley road/end point = 6 miles

Here is a couple of photos of the meeting place, and a little write up. Just for you have some clue as what to look for when arriving.

We should be able to make wildcat shelter NY the first night, we got to because no fires in NJ.. I think we better put a leash on wrongway cause there are many intersecting trails on the AT in this area, hopefully he will come running when we whistle and call his name:).. Most of this trip St line to elk pen is up and down mountians so don't carry to much weight or your knees are going to hate you.. The first 1.5 miles of the trail whether we went NOBO or SOBO are challenging, more so if icy.. Water is available most of the trail. By the way as I am writing this it just snowed 2" in an hour... Can't wait to get started..:D

30 miles north of Chester Gap (Front royal) puts you at Sam Moore Shelter. That's only 3 miles from Bear's Den, and there's no road at Sam Moore.

Also, quick hint: older maps show a parking lot on 638 (this is between Denton Shelter and VA55.). It is very closed. There is no where to put a car there, though I'm not sure you'd want to. There is a good sized lot north of VA55. On VA55 there is only shoulder parking. North of US50 on 601 there is also a large lot. If for some reason you need cars in the middle or whatever.

For those unfamiliar with the shelters:

Denton Shelter is very nice, but it's pretty early for you to stop unless you have shuttling stuff and start late. It's so nice that they closed the parking lot near it (mentioned above).

Manassas Gap Shelter is at your 10 mile point going north. It's an average AT shelter-- it's improved in recent years, it used to suck. I don't know if there's water there or not right now, but we've been getting regular precipitation. I hiked up there today, but I'm really sorry, I just didn't think to check the water source as I was packing my own. I'd check with the PATC. There's good tent spots and a hammock hanger should have no problem finding somewhere.

Dick's Dome is wee tiny and I don't think there's anywhere to tent. The area is not without it's charms, and the shelter is a cute place to eat lunch, especially if it's raining. There's a creek in front of the shelter. Many hunters use the wilderness area, so be sure to treat the water.

The section north of 50 has some PUDs. None are very big, but you will notice them. The ones north of VA7 are worse, IMO.

Rod Hollow is decent, but it does see a lot of use. I seem to recall that it has a couple of actual built up tent pads, but the place was very very wet when I was there, and I could have dreamed that. I think there's two water sources.

Sam Moore has a stream in front of it. I really like it, but I've heard thrus slag on it. Also, it's only 3 miles from Bears Den Hostel, so many just head there.

It's too bad about the car/road issues with the park. It would be perfect to start at Gravel Springs Gap and stop at US 50. The 10-mile point would be Tom Floyd, and that's a really nice shelter.

It is a real possibility that they could close the road due to weather, but it's also possible that it will be open the length of the park. Heck, we had an ice storm last week. It could be partially closed right now...and it is:

slamajama I saw a thread where you were asking about mass transit out to the area. Is that how you plan to get out there? If that is the case and you would like to instead you could catch a Metro North train up to near me and then we could drive over together. Its just another idea for you to think about. i would say that to take the Harlem Valley Line from GC up to Brewster North. for that matter you could also take the Port Jarvis line and get off at the Harriman stop the trail is about 1 mile or so south we can also grab you from this stop do the breakfast and then head out to the trail head in greenwood lake.

Astrogirl, thanks for the help. We do need a parking spot in the middle for DAKS can meet up with us.

I was looking for some weekend hiker books/maps that just showed trail heads/parking spots and milage but cant find anything. The maps they map for thru-hikers (books/map combo $20 - $38.) are nice but the sections I am looking for, the stores dont have in stock.

Wow - thanks for the finer details AstroGirl. That really helps quite a bit. Though the roller coaster before Bear's Den really is an annoyance. We'll definitely check out your reccomendations for campsites with vistas. There's a lot to digest.

I hate it when you head out to the store for one thing, you end up gong to 4 places and forgetting what you went for in the first place but end up buyn a bunch of other junk. :o

Then as soon as you get home, duaaaa - you remember what you went out for in the first place.

Well, guess its one more trip out today to buy the dog his sleeping pad for this hike. You know the worse part is I am done buyn all my stuff, so when I get home there is nothing for ME to play with......... the dog has gotten new shoes (Ruff Wear) - a pack (REI Adventure Dog - really well built a little pricey at $45.00, but should hold up over time) - couple of new chew toys for night time and now a sleeping pad...... damn dog...... ..... Damn lucky dog.....:D !

Oh well... going to clean some clothes and head back out.....

Well if you get him trained properly he'll be great on the trail. Aldo's just about there as far as being a good trail dog. When I put his gear on today to take that photo - he was ready to hit the trail hard. The boots will make a big difference on ice - the pack I've got him is his second pack for the year. The first one lasted from GA to NH ... it had some areas that started getting thread bare - but since we got it from REI - they swapped it out for a brand new one at no cost. All I really need for our upcoming trek in NY is a set of crampons. I may just stop by campmor on the way to Elk Pen to see what they've got. Otherwise I may end up ordering something from REI ... they don't have crampons at the College Park store. I guess we're too far south for that type of gear. It all depends on how it looks in the area we're planning on trekking. I know for a fact that the ridgeline that we encounter north of the Jersey border could be treacherous. If it's icy ... I'll need at least a set of 6 point crampons. No need for an ice ax - because if you fall there's no way to self-arrest on the rocks IMHO. The views are going to be great - if we make the ridgeline. On a lighter note ... happy new year.

I was just at Campmor this past weekend and they had a few types of Campons but decided not to buy any. sticking with the YakTrax. Unless it is full ice what you gain on the ice you will loose on rock as they are no good on rock for walking flat only when using toe points in mixed climbs. That is what the guy at the store was telling me plus the money can be better spent getting a lighter weight sleeping bag. That way I can keep the 14 lb food bag.

Now for the bad news.

I might have torn my left calf muscle today. Was helping a landscaper friend push a big walk behind mower up a trailer ramp. We had to lift the back of the mower to clear the trailer deck. When we did, I felt a "pop" in my left calf followed by a searing hot pain, much like what happened to my right hamstring when I tore it waterskiing last summer.
I'll have to take it slow and easy.
I may not be able to make the NY trip if it doesn't heal at least 80% by Jan 10th.
I'd appreciate any prayers sent my way. I'm on 800mg of Ibuprofin (left over from my hamstring tear) right now, so it doesn't feel too bad.

1600 mg. Ibuprofin??????? I'd be asleep before we left the trailhead!:D
Feeling a little better this morning after ice and heat and vitamin I. Relaxing today, repeating therapy. Going to work tomorrow will tell much more.

One God is enough for me. I just need a real BIG one.
Thanks for the thoughts.:)

I got lucky today. I was running around town looking for bargains when I swung by Hudson Trail Outfitters. They had a pair of crampons on sale for 69.88 - normally 119.00 - though the sale was over. They missed a couple of pairs that were still tagged at the lower price. So they had no choice but to sell them to me at the sale price! Awsome - once in a while I get lucky. The model I got is the Petzyl Irvis spirlock. I'm ready! This is going to be one heck of a trip.

Its worth a shot, the packs would go in the bed of the truck, I will have the Tonno cover on so the packs wont be in the open. The dogs will be the ones to deal with the room issue, as long as they lay side by side or sit up - they should fit :D ??

You heading up towards 695? I am off 795 about 6 miles. It says it'll take 4.5 hours from my house. I plan on leaving around 2:30 or 3 am to give myself enough lost time :) !

Sounds good, If you can get to my house around the 3am mark.(3am, I dont get up that early to go to work  ) Figure on a few stops for Hudson to pee on stuff along the road.

Took Hudson to the vet today (another $75.00 - damn dog :) ) So he is legally tagged and up to dates on all shots! There was another dog there - a kick dog - he was pretty good with him, took about 10 minutes and then they both settled down. Cant wait till the puppy stuff grows out. They should be okay together.

My computer and printer aren't talking, so I can't download maps from Mapquest.
Directions from North are appreciated.

Thanks.

I was orig. thinking of taking Rte 84 in Conn. but decided to take 95-287-87, so will be coming in from south. It will probably take about 5 hours. Does that sound right?
I don't want to show up too late.

Very cool. I broke down and purchased an REI down jacket similar to what you have and a pair of switch back gloves with liners. After getting those 2 pieces of clothing I think I'm set. I'll put my packing list up for critique in a day or so. Getting psyched on this end :D

got everything packed and ready to go, just have to buy food.

Also, the snow suit for Hudson came in, now its really screwed up. The XL we got him first was too small and the XXL is waaay to big/long in the rear, so I have to cut it and redo it (not enough time to look for another on). Maybe the dogs in china are built different then the dogs in the US :D .

No snow suit for Mr.Aldo ... I can't get myself to shell out the $75 bucks. I would normally go through the winter with just fleece ... but I thought it wise to get the down jacket for myself. Aldo does have the luxury of a fur coat.

Tinker, I would take 84 to newburgh ny and take 87 south to exit 16.. when you pay the toll take the exit on the right just out of the toll booth.. At the traffic light turn left on rt 32 and arden valley road is about 3 miles on the left side by a sign the says Welcome to Harriman State Park.. we are about 2.5 pours from Hartford CT if that helps..

I can make it from my house which is just about 1 hr from the trail head to the Cape in 3 1/2 to 4 hours. In the AM even though 95 is shorter you will be bogged down in traffic from about at least Norwalk on through the Tapanzee Bridge. everything has to funnel throgh here for the City and it is just gridlock.

Looks shorter and fasrter - never is. Traffic sucks, tolls cut your time in half, no one no hows to drive on that road.

Made the mistake of using 95 heading to Mt. Washington........ Never again!!

The UPS site says they delivered them Friday at 10.45am. Nothing in my box or on the door step!!!

I can only hope that the mail lady grapped the package out of the mail box, thinking it was outgoing mail. I hope thats the case, other wise I am S.O.L. for the hike. Guess I'll find out today when the mail comes.

I'll be slip-n-slidn the whole way .... :D .... that should make my pace faster then all yours......:D

Are there any regulations as to wearing blaze orange in the NY woods. I know in RI we need to wear 200 sq. in. until sometime in March.

Are any of you guys interested in looking at a Hilleberg Akto? If so, I can bring mine and use it. If not, I might bring my hammock. Still undecided. Since temps are supposed to be moderate I will probably cook with alcohol. Still undecided as to whether to use "Beer can stove" or Supercat with Evernew ti pot.

Any votes on what I should take?

I'm just bringing my small 1 ounce alcohol stove (Trangia) - I'm leaving the Whisperlite at home. The last outing we had - we were boiling water from a campfire most of the last day. Which is what I'm planning on doing ... my stove is just there in case the weather makes fire building impossible. I'd go with the lightest stove you've got.

No idea on the orange, I dont own any sooo.... I'll say they dont :)

As far as the Hammock goes, if your comfy in it, bring it along. I like to check them out sense I have only seem Sasquatch's the one time. Also...... bears seem to like to toy with sleepers in hammocks first.....the sound of you all screaming as the bears see who can spin you faster gives me time to high-tail it outta there.....:D :D............Dont worry, Doggiebag and I will get some good video of it before running .....:)

Let me chime in on the tent/hammock thingy ...
I'm regularly a hammock guy, but I'm bringing my tent at this time of year. Though Sasquatch seems to be surviving if not thriving using his hammock. I feel better in my 4 season tent during the winter season - besides I have this ongoing experiment of heating the tent with candle lanterns.

I do. I haven't bothered to read all the fine print in the contract, but I believe that Verizon callers can call each other for free. If this is true, you can call me (Wrongway has my #). This post a question and wait for an answer isn't the same (though it's certainly cheaper than using a land line telephone)!

So, one more time, final at this time I guess - How many are going?

Lowest temp. expected

Rain? Snow???

Trail conditions?

Thanks.

It looks like 6 humans 2 dogs. Cloudy on the 10th, 40% showers on the 11th and cloudy on the 12th. Not sure about the trail conditions - physically it's about 5+ miles of ridgeline past the NJ border heading north. Lowest temps expected mid 20's for the 10th thru the 12th. This is all subject to change obviously.

As per Wrongway:
"Never underestamate ANYONE.... old, young, really old, female or male...... they can all kill.

People that seem to be tryn to be too nice, seem to have too much in common with you or try to get you to "check this route out instead"....... there is usually a reason for this..... Red Flags should be popping up.

If you start to get a "feeling or vibe" from someone, dont hesitate to turn back the way you came or know where people are. If it starts to get weirder.... make some noise..... draw attention to your self."

Rick:
I'm not sure how to react to this ... which you posted up on the "staying safe board" ... I first started cracking up uncontrollably because I didn't view you as being one who doesn't know how to handle yourself. But my experience is ... most weirdos are not up on the ridges with us. It's too much work for them. They're in towns, malls and parking lots where the picking is easier. I doubt if a psycho will wait in sub-zero conditions at 3,000 feet for the chance of some entertainment passing through. Sure things happen (as recent events have shown) but let's not all start hiking with the fear of the boogeyman looming ... perfectly understandable in light of recent events. But I will not be ready to cold cock the next hiker I run into who gives me the willies. Though I do completely agree with not letting your guard down. The truth remains that what's more apt to kill us out there is the weather or a fall.

I dont look at every one as weird or anything and I would say we (hikers) are in one of the safest areas while hiking. The only thing I meant by the thread was to not let your guard down. When you do.... thats when it happens.

Some of it comes from my training as a Fed and what I have seen....... you see an Officer under esitmate a young lady and bam, hes on the street with a busted jaw. Kinda the same thing while hiking, you dont need to be scared of everyone...... just keep your eyes open. Thats all.

...... now, go back to uncontrollably laugh'n :)

CJ06887 and Fonsie Glad you guys can attend.
My clothing list for the 3 day NY trip is as follows based on todays weather forcast for Arden, NY which has a low temperature forcast of the low twenties for the hike:

Long underwear top/bottom
Micro fiber T-shirt
Fleece Top
Down Jacket
Convertible/zip off hiking pants
Wet weather top/bottom
3 pairs of socks
Winter gloves with inserts
Balaclava
Baseball cap
Asolo boots
neck warmer/scarf

That should be plenty for me. Comments/suggestions are welcome.
Note: There is a 50% chance of precipitation on the 11th. Ensure that you have all clothing not worn while hiking in waterproof bags/trashbags to make sure you have something dry to change into when we make camp.

We would all meet here 1st:
Then hike the trail up to snickers gap, VA7/VA679. Horseshoe Curve Restaurant .3 miles from the trail, I am thinking maybe we can park somewhere around there.

This would give us 33 miles total.

The weather forcast I got was for Arden, NY which is at a elevation of 550 feet asl. We'll be running around the ridges between the NJ line to Arden which is mostly running on ridges at most 1,400 feet. There are some sections that will be exposed to weather. I'm bringing mine.

wrongway, you guys can ride with me, my truck is a extended cab so it will be a little cramped for one of you guys who sits in the back seat.. Question? Will the dogs be ok in the bed of the truck, I have a cap so it will be 3 packs and 2 dogs for about 30 minutes to the trail head.. what do you think?? Scott

Hmmm let me ponder that .... THAT'S Perfect! I knew you guys wouldn't leave us hanging! Never mind the freak comment earlier :D

Sounds perfect. It'll be my second time going through the roller coaster. You know that there is a parking lot for hikers at the Bears Den Hostel right? It might be more secure.

Thats cool, we will all meet at the Horseshoe and can figure it from there....

I would bring some kind of foot traction control device.. I was out today and there still is ice and plenty of frost in the ground which makes for slippery mud.. If someone slips/falls and breaks a bone we may need to amputate the limb.. I was planning on bringing a little Jack Daniels so the pain should be minimal during the proceedure..:D By the way the trailhead parking lot is still a sheet of ice.. Was somone bringing sand or gravel??

I bringing my "crampons" to test them out..... ice or not. :)

13.95 lbs??? Wow.... you eat a lot :D ! Well there will be 2 dogs "stealing/begging" your food this time....;)

I weighed my food bag and its 3lb 7.5 oz. I'll most likely add another pound before the trip.

well the week long trip I took it got to 31lbs. I plan to be about 26lbs for the weekand. thats including food and water. If I can it it lighter I would, its winter time so of course its a little heavy. I might be able to shave a couple of lbs if it dont rain...Like mabe 4lbs. Im also hoping it be nice weather so maybe I dont have to weir so many layers because that will save me weight of myself...I allready weigh 212lbs with no clothes.

I was thinking the same thing myself. Upper 50's here in MD. I looked at the weather map for the entire country ... it looks like there's a cold front moving in the mid-section of the country. I'm still brining my crampons. I haven't packed my pack yet ... so I'm not sure how heavy it is going to top out at.

Well I went and bought a fish scale today to actually find out how heavy items really are. i had an idea based on published weights but need to see for myself. the scale goes up to 50 lbs so if it maxes out i give up the hiking thing and just start fishing more. Just kidding. I would miss all the idiocy that the woods brings out in us all.

I have it figured that with winter sleeping bag as it is right now (want a new one) and all the other gear but w/o food or water but including my big fuel bottle full I am at 23 lbs base weight. That is much better than I thought it was. now here is the pisser. the food that i did not use last time, yeah the stuff I carried for apparently no good reason was 5 lbs. time to pack smarter.

Hope you can make it nw: This is the last latest information that we're using to get folks to the initial rally point:
1) NY trip - Jan 10,11,12 (19.5 miles total, including trailheads)

JAN 10 Meet at first vehicle drop off point, by 8:30
This is the first meet place:
HOW TO GET THERE: Follow N.J. Route 17 north to the New York State Thruway and take the first exit, Exit 15A (Sloatsburg). Turn left at the bottom of the ramp onto N.Y. Route 17 north. Continue on Route 17 through the villages of Sloatsburg, Tuxedo and Southfields. About two miles north of Southfields, turn right onto Arden Valley Road. Cross the bridge over the New York State Thruway, then make the first right at a sign “Hikers’ Trailhead Parking.” Park in the dirt parking area to the west of a large meadow, known as the Elk Pen.
***We will then go as a group and eat (if you want) at the Greasy Spoon.****
####We will then drive South to the state line and start hiking North#####
JAN 11 Hike North to
JAN 12 Finish North to Elk Pen Park and our vehicles.

I'm sure Wrongway will have a final update tonight. Though it's still warm mother nature has a tendency of surprising us out there.

The first night they are calling for a mix of Rain and Snow with 1 inch of rain possible. I like the NOAA.org site you get the best forecasts there. The first day we will be by greenwood lake ny just type that in for the forecast city. I think that a fire will be out unless we can find a way to make water burn, then again we are near New Jersy.

Still have sore throat and stuffy nose, but nothing more. Should be fine for trip. Will be taking 84-87s to avoid city traffic as proposed. Even though longer mileage-wise, should be shorter time-wise, possibly with better overall gas mileage, too.
Bringing wet weather gear and crampons, though hoping not to need to carry the crampons. Will be hammocking under 10x12 tarp. Should be more than enough room underneath for communal area to pack up in morning, as well as being able to use tarp for lunch breaks if necessary.
Not ultralight this trip. Carrying cannister stove and ti pot instead of beer can stove (doesn't work too well below 30 degrees).
I will be trying chemical toe warmers under stove cannister for better cold weather performance. Should work.
I will be calling Rick tonight.

That's great to hear Tinker. Besides I didn't expect you to be using either your nose or throat to haul your pack and make miles anyway :D - you may need your throat for grunting up the hills though. What does not kill you only makes you stronger - as someone once said. I'm hauling my crampons - looks like we have the cold front getting ready to settle in soon enough - nothing dramatic but they do have high wind warnings in the area which usually fortells a dramatic change in weather. Glad to hear that you can make it. Time to load the pack.

I think that Wildcat is just about 9 miles on the first day. I think that a bunch of the ice has gone now as we set record highs here yesterday and it is still warm with a strong wind right now so it will continue to melt quickly. I have not walked the ridge that we walk the first day but some people have said that it can be a bit exposed in a few places but what some people consider exposed I feel is five and vice versa so who knows i figure if it's too bad we bush wack around for a bit.

I may bring a little cognac. If icy ... from what I recall the immediate area in the ridgelines parallel to Greenwood lake was composed of huge slabs of rock. Not boulders but more like the type that you could slide off into a nasty fall if you lose traction. I could imagine that stretch to be a little hairy. I went through that section in good weather and I could distinctly remember the challenge then. We'll find out if my memory is photographic. I'm erring on the side of caution. It's been warm but with the high winds they're calling for today - it could easily freeze things up.

Looks like the weather's changing a lot faster than even the weather service has predicted. I just got a call from Sasquatch who was just driving by the trail near the Hudson River ... the winds are high enough to put whitecaps on the water. The snow is gone from the ground and they've been experiencing record highs. I believe the warm weather spell is over. Temeratures should start dropping today and should keep declining all through the weekend. I'm hauling full winte gear for this trek. Expect to get rained on after camp is setup tomorrow evening.

The directions on getting to the Elk Pen are posted a few pages back.. Your right that it is not on the map and there are a couple Arden Valley roads all which are seasonal roads most of which are closed except the piece by the Elk Pen.... If anybody has questions about where we are meeting private message me with a phone number and I will call you back.. There are some different ways to get there but if your comming from the North The Elk pen is 2 miles off exit 16 on 87 the new york state thurway if that helps.. Also the trail head is at Route 210 at the NY/NJ state line not brady or longhouse rd.. I will hand out road maps and AT trail maps including a profile of the section we are hiking when we meet tomorrow.. Scott

thanks doogiebag

arden valley road is all over the place. my guide does not list it at the location you mentioned but i do see where we will be starting. nj/ny state line trail, 9 miles south of wildcat shelter. looks like tomorrow will be rain free until the evening after we set camp...

I live near Front Royal. The shoulder parking is a large area, and there are usually other cars there on weekends. I've never left my car there overnight, but many, many people do. If you can park at the 4H it will save you some not very interesting trail and your car won't be on 522.

Officially, there is parking at the dead end on 601 and a side trail up to the AT near Tom Floyd wayside. I've only parked there for day hiking.

I would absolutely hike with y'all, but I will be out of town. :(

There are two other places that are very nice. First, the relo just south of US 50 is beautiful. The trail there used to be pretty bland, but it's been moved to a more open ridge with lovely views. My favorite local place is just south of VA55 before Denton Shelter. There's a gorgeous meadow on top of the big hill/small mountain there. I just hiked up there today, in fact.

I almost never day hike in the park unless I really need to get out and some hunting season just opened. I just like the trail around Linden better than the north section of the park.

working on something

Thanks, was looking through all the post......info over load, I came up with the plans before reading the above info, what do you think?
The overall plan is perfect ... the ideal start would be at the 4-H parking lot as Astrogirl suggested but it does not look like it's open to the public until Memorial Day. The VA 522 lot seems ideal enough - according to AG folks use that for overnighters. The best place for a end-point would probably be at the Bear's Den Hostel ... which would be a better location for the vehicles. This will bump up the mileage by around 3 miles. No biggie. If we don't hear of any better suggestions - I say we fly with this one. Overall - the mileage and availability of parking for the section looks solid. Let's see if anyone can chime in later with suggestions. This is a pretty easy section ... it'll be good training for Hudson IMHO.

It may be a better option to have the Official "meet" near the start of the trailhead near 522. Just in case we have folks coming up from the south. That way they don't have to go all the way up to Bluemont/Bear's Den just to drive all the way back to VA522. Let's have a official start time at the 522 parking lot. Your call on the start time.

Fonsie - Glad to meet you, it was a fun 2.5 days. You missed the Roller Coaster - that was pretty cool, not as bad as I thought it would have been but still a butt kicker. Maybe next time we can do the roller coaster from Bears Den to Rods Shelter and back. Just ditch the Rambo knife for a spare set of socks - :D.

Doggie Bag - Always a good time. cant wait for the new video to come out.

Aldo - Yea I know, dogs cant read (well maybe this one can ) hope the paws heal fast.

AstroGirl - Good to meet yea, I am prety sure you were more comfy in the hammock then we were in the shelter.

Brian, Will, Rob - I think I got the names right, We met these guys at the parking lot after Rt. 50 (?). It was good night, thanks for the help with fire wood at Rod Shelter. It was a cold arse night!! Hope you guys made it to the next shelter in time to get another big fire going!

Thanks to all for a great trip - :sun - awsome time!!!

2nd stove..... thats your "thing" now - you have to bring both for now on!!!! :D

If it makes you feel better, I think it was Rob (one of the hikers we met after you left.......) he carried a hatchet for chopping wood :), came in handy and was great to have - as long as someone else is carring it! Weighed more then the rambo bear killing knife you had.

I'll see thursday, mmm 2 stove well I will keep the 2nd stove...I been carring 2 for about 3 years now, you never kno who sells what fuel but that dam rambo bear knife I have only carried it a couple of times and no more....

Earlier this month I hiked from HF down to Bear's Den and back, looks like you folks had a much different hike than I did just a bit more than a week later. I was completely floored to find myself hiking in near 70 degree weather for three days straight in early January, but I'll most certainly take it!

Looks like you all had quite the trip though, fresh snow and all! I just started checking out WB and one of the first threads I find is about a local hike (for me), thanks....

Just be safe Fonsie. Keep an eye on the weather. Don't go nuts on lightening up too much ... it is winter hiking; regardless of the fact that it's Northern VA. It was exhausting doing the roller coaster on the last day - specially when the winds picked up. Great hiking with you :D - we'll have to do it again.

Well looks like i missed out on this hike. I know that asking for two hikes back to back is pushing it a bit too much right now have to save up in that matrimonial bank account for when the weather turns nice. I will get my pics from the NY trip posted. Still trying to figure out the new computer and where stuff is at on it. Sorry I missed it.

Break in new boots on the roller coaster? Wish I could make this one :) !

That should be fine, bring liner socks and a few sections of duct tape for those hot spots.

If by chance my work schedule changes, I will let you know if I can hike along - that is if you want company, dont want to cramp your style :) . As of now I work.

I have had a great time on these last few trips..... sucks I gotta work a normal schedule again... been a blast everyone, really enjoyed meeting everyone and getting to know you all! Hope to do at least one more overnighter with somw fellow WB'ers before starting my Thru-Hike in March!
