View Full Version : Wayah Gap SR 1310

Starting to plan my summer backpacking trips and one is going to be in NC on the "AT".
My wife is going down to Greenville, NC end of June. I am having her drop me off where the "AT" crosses SR 1310 (Wayah Gap) and I will spend 5 days hiking north to Fontana Dam where she will pick me up.
Now does anyone know what kind of road SR 1310 is? Will she have any trouble driving it with a regular car?

The road is fine, as is the road up to the bald.

YES thank you. My wife is a real scaredy cat when it comes to driving alone, let alone on a bad road. Now she has NO excuss.
Looks like about 45 minutes to the "AT" out of Franklin??

The road is good, but it is tour typical twisty mountain climb.

It's very nice! When she gets to the top of the bald she can go up in the old tower and it is a view like no other in NC

Great view from the stone tower, but I think the view from the fire tower platform on Wesser is just as good and it is a great place to pitch a tent.

I did not get to the platform on Wesser as it was raining like a cow peeing on a flat rock when we got to that point! I do want to go back and see that view.

A little windy, but a miilion stars. This is one of my favorite spots I've camped on the AT. I know what you mean about a cow peeing on a flat rock. I've missed som serious good views over the years.:sun

I had not considered her taking me to the top. I was just going to jump out of the car on 1310 and go. May be nice for her and it will shorten my first days hike after driving all the way from CT. Have to think about that.
It's pavement to the gap & good gravel on to the bald. It's all uphill from the gap to the bald if you want to hike it. Also, there was no water from NOC past Stecoah Gap ~16 miles this summer. Perhaps this will be a wet winter / spring and help us all out.

Yea water was a big problem this past summer. I did most of PA and it was just unavailable. At one point I came down with heat exhaustion that was boarder line heat stroke. I was carrying 5 litters of water when through it all and there was just none to be found. I had to get off the trail for two days. Thank G.. for the 501 shelter.

What everyone has already said about the road and the view is the absolute truth, but your wife is going to one tired lady if she is going to drop you off and then head to Greenville, NC. It's about 400 miles from there. Are you sure she's not going to Greenville, SC. Inquiring minds just wondered.
