What would happen if you threw a lit match into a full privy???:)

If it were a closed system maybe. Too much venting around the privvies to collect enough methane to ignite.

Ummmm. . .huh??:confused:
I don't think it'd do much, if anything. Even if the vent were to somehow clog, mysteriously or not, there's still this big hole at the top called the seat and I don't think enough methane would build up to make anything go boom.

The big hole at the top is the vent I was referring to and I've yet to see a privy that doesn't have one.;)

Ya know, the more I think about it matches and privies and methane and TP, the more I'd avoid that Pentaprivy, cause I think there might be a shaped charge situation brewing there with the resultant methane blast focused directly on the Hexacuba shelter:-? :rolleyes: :D

Hey, No blowing up a privy, unless you helped build one first!
That being the case, I could volunteer to go to Leroy Smith Shelter someday soon and see what actually happens when I throw a match in.
What type of match is to be used?? Wood or paper?
Throw it while it's lighting, or just drop it in when lit?
If one match doesn't work, should I try the whole pack?
If you hear about this happening in the news soon, please tell my wife and son what really happened.
Everyone should help emptying a privy someday, instead of always just filling them up. :sun
This belongs on the political forum.:) But I'm going to add to it: Along time ago when they shipped manure in the lower holds of ships methane would form and explosions would occur then they figured if they shipped it higher up in the hold it would vent lessening the chance of explosion. They then began to mark it S**T meaning ShipHighInTransit.

I doubt the hurricane match would work. Perhaps what's needed is a small catalyst detonation to get things moving. I think you should get a few M-80's, go to the nearest privy you can find, get real close to the opening so as not to miss anything, and throw one of those lit M-80's in. Remember to get back to us with the results. Should be a fascinating piece of research science.

Mythbusters did it, didn't do a thing. Way to many holes, cracks, vents, etc in a privy.
I think they eventually got it to blow but they were piping pre determined amounts of methane and oxygen in and they had sealed all the vents w/ duct tape.

During the main pack of Nobos, it would probably make the privy smell a whole lot better.
Any methane or other flammable bodily gases dilute very quickly in the outside air after doing ones's business.

One of the more memorable details I have performed for Uncle Sam was "s**t burning detail". We would have to douse the bins with diesel fuel and light them and stir occasionally to burn the poo. Some of our "friends" would sometimes toss in some blank ammunition to liven things up for you. Thanks a bunch LOL. The things we do......

Panzer, it sounds to me as if you may have been in attendance the night they torched the privy at the Rausch Gap shelter a few years ago - damn thing caught the woods on fire and burned half the lower hillside. (But we think that they used gasoline to start it....)

I did this once during my hike. I can't remember if it was a firecracker or a match but there was a lot of toilet paper in the privy that turned out was pretty dry. It caught on fire and a lot of smoke came billowing out the hole. I frantically ran back to get my nalgene or a pot of water and put it out. (I had already emptied my bladder shortly before the incident, so my natural firehose was of no use). Luckily it went out, but this experiment was not one of the smartest things I did during the hike.
A lot of ignorant people -- you know people who didn't know privies were supposed to explode -- have tossed cigarets and matches into privies over the decades. All survived. That's proof that it's pretty hard to make a priviy explode.
