View Full Version : Whats on your "Bucket List"

STEVEM

I saw an ad tonight for a new film starring Jack Nicholson entitled "The Bucket List". Essentially the plot revolves around two terminally ill men doing the things they had always dreamed about doing before they "kicked the bucket".

I've seen two young men die this year, both of pancreatic cancer. Niether had a clue that 2006 was the last Christmas they'd spend with their families. I also know a special young lady who is currently battling breast cancer. She's 39 and her son is 5. She's doing well and I know her only wish is to see her little boy grow up.

My dad always wanted to fish for northern pike in Canada. Other than TV guide, the only thing he ever read was fishing magazines. He never went on that trip.

With the new year coming, I think I'll start working on my list. I was able to check one off this year, my daughter finally graduated from college with her nursing degree.

Anyway, whats on your "bucket List"? What are the places, things and experiences you want to see, do and have before you "kick the bucket"?

A good topic! Using death as your advisor can quickly get to the bottom line of what's really important.

I can honestly say I could go tonight with few regrets. I've had a super life, and have laughed and loved and tasted freedom, and also submitted willingly to the yoke of a task I wanted to undertake. The only regrets have been unkindnesses, not missed experiences.

That said, if I have a few years remaining, I'd love to see Alaska, Corsica, the Pyranees, take a trip down what remains of the river through the Grand Canyon, see South America, Scotland, Australia, Thailand, walk across Ireland, horse-pack again in the Bob Marshall, walk in the Swiss Alps in summertime ("the hills are alive..."), walk out west and visit the national parks...
;-)

I've been a Hospice volunteer, blessed with the privilege of sitting with folks as they thundered down to their Bottom Line. Pretty much what they regretted was hurting people. Even unfulfilled dreams faded before the demands of the heart. Be kind. Hurry!
;-)

I've got a list:

I'd like to see my four children successfully settle into adult life - they are 15, 17, 19, 21 right now.

I'd like to be blessed with a few grandchildren.

I'd like to play the Old Course at St. Andrews

I'd like to see Italy, Greece, Israel, Egypt, and Russia - Archaeology and Art mostly.

I'd like to give thru-hiking another shot(abandoned an attempt in 1976), but realistically, it may not be for me. We'll see. I will try again in 2010 with my daughter and see how far I/we get. At worst it'll be a great long section hike.:) When I was younger, I always wanted to be an elite mountaineer - climb Everest, do the seven summits, etc, but twice came down with pretty severe AMS just above 4000 meters, and once with HAPE(at 5500 meters). Pretty much the end of aspiring to do that. Hiking lower mountains will simply have to do for this lifetime.

Quite a lot to ask for.:sun

I'd like to play the Old Course at St. Andrews

I played it and I would rather play anywhere else in Scotland. It is right on the North Sea and conditions are usually brutal (cold, windy, rainy). The fairways are concrete, the rough is impossible, and the greens are like putting on glass. If you do go, don't get into a pot bunker. The only way out is with an overhand toss.

Personally, my number one pick of wish to play courses is Augusta National.

I there's nay wind and rain, there's nay golf.;) I almost think that if the weather wasn't nasty while playing the Old Course that somehow I wouldn't be getting the true experience.

Getting on The National is really difficult even if you're connected to
VIP's. My friend played it once as the guest of one of the old money southern members. Found out after the fact they could have used a fourth. Aaaarrrrrggghhh! I've played a lot of other famous courses(Pine Valley, Spyglass, Pebble, Pinehurst) but I agree with you on your choice. I don't even list it as a desire though 'cause it's basically just not going to happen.

I've got three out five from that list.

I somhow missed that whole part of the world while travelling on business years ago. Got to some of the others while commissioning chem process facilities: France and Holland, Romania and East Germany prior to the collapse of the Soviet Bloc. Columbia and Mexico on coffee plants.

Or failing that, just pick up where you left off...

A definite possibility. We are looking at several alternate itineraries as well.

I've always got a list. I try to knock off at least one thing a year. When I do one, I move on to the next, and rough out plans for the next two or three.

Foreign hikes: 1) Above the Artic Circle in Europe (planned for 2008) 2) Hike to Everest Base Camp (2010?)

US: 1) PCT 2) CDT 3) Grand Canyon 4) See other places too numerous to mention--long list

Spend more time skiing.

Interesting thread. It's amazing how little comes to mind at first. I've done an awful lot in my life! Hiking the JMT with my youngest this summer is right up there. That's gonna be a blast! Live long enough to have some Grandchildren.

My wife wants to take a road trip down the West Coast in 2009 for our 20th anniversary. That should be fun. I want to visit lots of old towns along the way and visit some of the really big Redwood groves. I'd like to go a few places like Alaska, and hike the Wonderland Trail, and maybe the Grand Canyon Rim to Rim. Go to Scotland and find some ancestors. Visit Antarctica.

I guess once I thought a bit, things started to flow.

--Climbing Kilimanjaro
--Everest Base Camp trek
--A trip to Sweden (I'm of Swedish descent)

Greetings Stevem and colleagues,

Thanks to stevem for posting such an emotional topic. My dad passed away from Pancreatic cancer. I think he died doing what he loves the most. Surgery, even during his hallucinations (Opiates) he kept talking and moving his hands as if he was doing eye surgery.

I have compiled a list of 101 things I want to do;however, I have to admit that I have become a weak person as I have let work and society dictate who I am.

Thanks to all of your wonderfull postings, I dedicate the rest of my life to truly focusing on what is important and starting with the biggest item on my list. Walking the AT, I will probably start this March and do TN as a section hike. I pray to god that this experience will let me dump my corporate job and move into the real world.

I've enjoyed reading the thoughtful responses to my question. I'm not exactly sure why I started this thread, probably just the time of year or maybe a side effect of cheap wine.

Driving home from work tonight I saw a glove in the middle of the road. This brought back memories of my Dad.

My Dad would leave for work very early in the morning, probably 4:30 AM. There were several ski areas near our home which he would drive past on his way to work. I'm not sure when or why, but he started picking up lost gloves and mittens that he saw in the road. He put a cardboard box near the backdoor of our home to store the mismatched gloves and mittens, and it wasn't long before the box was filled. When my brothers and I would go out to play in the snow we'd pick our mittens and gloves from the box, sometimes a glove on the left hand and a mitten on the right, maybe blue on one hand and red on the other. When we'd come in my Mom would hang the wet gloves near the furnace to dry and we could pick another dry pair from the box.

I doubt that we were all that poor, or that any of this was necessary and I do remember having a normal pair of matching gloves to wear to school. Maybe it was just Dads way of assuring that his 3 boys never had to wear a pair of wet gloves. Or, maybe he really was that cheap.

Anyway, I'm planning to do a little hiking this weekend and I think I'll wear a pair of mismatched gloves or mittens. I know I can find some in my drawer or, better yet, I'll see if I can find that lost glove on my way to work tomorrow morning. I think my dad would approve.

It won't be a world class adventure, but I suspect I'll have a memorable hike.

I made a bucket list of sorts when I started seeing friends die while I was in the Marine Corps.

It started as:

1) Survive my time in the Marine Corps. (done)
2) Thru-hike the AT (done)
3) Summit Denali (I have since scrapped this one because I realize it's just another mountain, and I've climbed plenty)
4) Make a living in the outdoors (sort of done - worked as a NOLS Instructor for three seasons 2001-2003)
5) Find the love of my life (done at least half a dozen times :o )

Now that I've had close to a decade to mature, my list looks more like:
6) Complete lots of smaller trails (LT, JMT, etc)(partially begun)
7) Section hike the PCT.
8) Hike the Scottish Highlands from the North Sea to the Atlantic coast.
9) Finish building the Cumberland Trail in Tennessee. (begun)

And the really important ones:
10) Marry the woman I've chosen (and who miraculously chose me back - will complete in May '08)
11) Raise children who will be genuinely good people.
12) Walk trails with my family whenever possible.

2. Try to help my son realize he has an arm that can put him through college (key word try, not demand, etc.)
3. Become a Scoutmaster (my son is 10)
4. Catch the perfect wave (caught a few in Costa Rica, and one that was close to perfect, but I'll keep striving for perfection during my annual trek to Costa Rica)
5. Become fluent en Espanol (in Spanish)
6. Thru hike the AT, but this will have to wait until I can take the time off (how many over 60's do this, I wonder)
7. Hike Patagonia
8. Take a train ride across northern Canada
9. Sail a long way
10. Teach high school math as a hobby when I can retire, and help kids out along the way

Dang, I've got to get to work.

The Charlotte Observer is starting a "bucket list" competition. I wonder what they'd think of mine? Probably not noble enough.

I'm not exactly sure why I started this thread, probably just the time of year...maybe it's the time of year
Yes and maybe it's the time of man
And I don't know who I am
But life is for learning

Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young (and Woodstock) aside, this is a very interesting thread.

I'm amazed at how many bucket lists are comparable to mine. Maybe I shouldn't be so surprised, though, given that this list is comprised of dreamers and adventurers. This thread almost begs to be a subtopic in the Hooking Up forum, to facilitate the fulfillment of more bucket dreams.

My own bucket list is longer than can be fulfilled with the time I likely have left on this planet, so I guess I need to prioritize and GET MOVING.

Thanks for starting this thread.

Not necessarily in this order:

-Finish Sectioning AT
-Thru-hike PCT
-Build my retirment home (straw bale or cordwood) (Attending a cordwood workshop this summer)
-Thru-hike Colorado Trail
-Thru-hike Long Trail
-Trail crew on CDT
-Hike minimum of 100 miles of NCT in each state
-See/explore Grand Canyon
-Bicycle across US (this will incoporate visiting the Pacific Northwest and Pacific Coast, two other items I need to do) (As Tony Robbins would advise - gotta Chunk!) :-)
-Help my unofficial, adopted grand daughter finish her education and start her adult life on good footing (still has quite a few years to go, but on the right path!)

So many things left to do, gotta make more time somehow. :-)

My bucket list is real simple: To live out permanently.

And I liked Bearpaw's "Find the love of my life(done at least half a dozen times)".

I don't care how I stay outdoors, whether it be in a wood heated tipi, a canvas covered witu/hogan, a basecamp 12x12 tent, a bedroll on the ground, or on long backpacking trips using a small tent and a good sleeping bag. Just point me in the direction of a treeline, a creekside camp, an open bald in winter, a windy ridgetop, a lost rhododendron valley, or a stealth camp near a town, and I'll be happy.

The problem is, the more time I spend outdoors the more I need, and as I get older I realize this window will slam shut and yet I've only scratched the surface. The whole thing is about Beauty(the certain pristine sights in nature), and Freedom(no rent, no house, no electricity, few bills, and a home-on-the-back). The wind, rain and snow along a winding trail is a childhood fascination and a youthful mystery, the giddyness I feel now in being out is not far removed from how I felt when I was seven. It's the same.

Hey Chin, I'm planning on a Alaska RV trip right after TM in April. Come by Stecoah Gap the first two weeks of April. Three RV in our little caravan so far.............

Hey Bare Bear,

That is on my short list also but not this year-maybe 2009. Keep us posted and take good notes on your trip for me. You might consider a blog. Have a great trip and be safe.

The song "Live like you were dying" comes to mind.

"I'd feel deeper and I'd love sweeter.........."

I really feel at a loss to answer this question. I'm still fleeing my own mortality and am in deep denial.

Sure makes one think though.

"Skydiving
Rocky Mountain climbing
Went 2.7 seconds on a bull named Fu Manchu"
good song:) good philosophy

but seriously;
See my daughters graduate from college and graduate school.
Take care of my parents.
Spend lots of time with my wife of 26 years.
Hike, anywhere, when I can find the time.
Peace.

1. Destroy several of my enemies

2. Live to see several people fail in fulfilling their dreams

3. Fake my own death

4. Complete my butterfly collection

5. Eat an endangered animal (preferably kill it myself)

6. Watch from a safe and remote location as society crumbles under the weight of its own hypocrisy

7. Get a big screen tv

Things that missed the bucket:

I wanted to show my grandkids my soccer moves but my sons haven't made any grandkids yet. I played my last soccer game at age 45. I kicked the ball around with my son, who still plays in a men's soccer league, last summer and my moves are just gone.

A guy named Wildung and I were going to backpack across Europe when we got back from Vietnam. He was the guy in the site below on page 5, picture 1. He's the one next to the sarge. Didn't happen.

I'm way way behind schedule to be rich and famous.

In the bucket:

I want to hike northern England, Scottland from pub to pub. I'm supposed to visit Sweden next summer. My older son and his alien wife are going to have a second ceremony for her Swedish friends. Maybe I'll take time while I'm on that side of the ocean to hike.

I'd like to make my house energy independent. Might be easier to build a new house?

I consider from time to time going back to Vietnam to see certain places in the day light. I'm not sure if that's in my bucket or not.

To me living a simple, quiet life is a good thing to have in the bucket.
