Just getting the word out to anyone who’s interested, I’ve started a PCT channel on irc.foonetic.net / irc.xkcd.com as #PCT

for those of you not familiar with IRC you need a client (Windows: http://www.mirc.com/ / Mac: http://colloquy.info/ ) and then you need to connect to the server irc.xkcd.com on port 6667

you can then type /join #PCT into the text entry line of your client. I’m hoping we get a few people going here but I’m aware of the lack of technical savvy which seems to be the norm for the backpacking community.

Any questions feel free to e-mail me.

A little background on IRC is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IRC

It will be nice to talk about backpacking-related issues in real time if this ends up coming together.

For those of you who were interested in the PCT IRC room but didn't want to bother with an IRC client and figuring out all that, or were concerned with the "dangers" (real or imagined) of IRC might be interested in the fact that I have got a CGI:IRC interface working.

CGI:IRC allows you to connect to IRC through your web browser without having any special knowledge. Simply follow the link at the end of this post and on the next screen hit connect (or pick a different user name from the randomly generated one and hit connect) and chat away.

I'm hoping this boosts attendance of the room up a bit -- we've got about 10 fairly regular users but I'd like to see more -- IRC is always more fun with an average user count closer to 20 or more.

Simply follow that link and join us in #PCT !
