I'm assuming this is a supported hike? Yikes, 30 days seems impossible with or without support. I wish the guy luck still.

Article didn't give a whole lot of detail. 13 states, lol, way to check your facts:)

Dude's got an awesome resupply schedule. Everyday!

I'd load up on miles between Waynesboro, Va and Killington, VT. Maybe knockout some 90 miles days just to bank some for NH and Maine.

From Damascus, he could pull five ultras and be out in 5 days. Only the BRP could slow him down.

I don't know why he is starting so early tho. Why not start when the days are longer?

I haven't hiked south of the NJ/NY section in 30 years, but I don't remember ALL of northern GA being fodder for a "day hike" for ANY human. The idea of travelling on foot from Springer thru GSMNP in 4 days should pretty much end any serious discussion. He'd have to do some 100 mile days thru those "easier sections"(including the ones with the pointy rocks) to make up for any realistic mileage numbers on the first 400 miles and last 400 miles of trail.

Of course, the Whites and ME could be 70 mile per day pushover sections given the conditioning he'll get before hitting Glencliff

GA is no problem, southern NC is an easy walk, Smokies in a day, nothing to slow anyone down to Damascus. Plus in and out of Damascus is prime for an ultra. After that it's smooth but for the day out of I-81 into the BRP. Then its a walk til coming off of Moosilake. After that, there's gonna have to be some pushing, cos 70 is gonna get tough. NH not so bad, but the Mahoosics northward will be insane.

I guess it's a straight shot from Monson to Katahdin, tho. One day. That's gotta help make up some miles.

Lonnie,

If you are reading this thread. My stance on what you are planning on doing is: It is ill-concieved and dangerous. With all kidding aside, the responses and good-natured ribbing is ... should I say "normal" at WB. Please note that most experienced hikers on the board agree that you're planned mileages will result in injury at best or the involvement of SAR at worst. That being said. I hope you consider the experienced advise of your fellow hikers to heart.

Regards.

If Lonnie has realistic intentions for setting a record, he could have approached WB a little differently and would have been well received, and learned a lot in the process, btw. Since he was totally cavalier and not interested in listening to others, he got the kind of reception one would expect. Period.

Don't worry. He's a young man. The most likely result will be that he will do his utmost, fall short of his goal, and collapse in a pile of sweat with no greater ill effects than some aches and pains. After resting a while, he'll do the same the next day and the next day, and then realize his goal is unrealistic. He might go on to do a normal thru-hike that will do his mom proud. I hope that's the result.

Cowboy might become a trail legend yet. I hope he has a great hike, and does a realistic fast time to be proud of.

Actuall (and I only plan to cover this once) no one deleted Wild cowboy's post there MM - the thread was only shut down. I wish you would stop trying to stir up crap here when you know the truth is something different. What happened was wildcowboy made a few posts in other threads that were fairly inanne and then started a thread about his attempt. We shut it down because it was turning into a bash the Wildvowboy thread which seemed pretty useless. Now, instead of letting that whole affair die you keep bringing it back up. Seems your real intenet is to sew discord on this issue as the only result is to restart the bash Wildcowboy and his attempt will come back. You have some sort of ajenda here and I personally do not care for it.

So, here is your notice. Stop being the sewer of discord on this issue. If you don't, you can leave. The staff here all discussed this, and we all wish him the best and hope for the best on him - but creating another thread that ends up in the same manner is not usefull and will not be needed.

I hope you get it. I am heading to Springer in about 20 minutes and have notified the other moderators. Any problems again over this and you get to go into time out.
