He posted the other day that he was taking a few 4-day passes (commanders have the authority to give individual soldiers a four day weekend that isn't chargeable leave) and getting started on his hike, so that may be where he is.

Rock begins his NOBO BMT/AT hike today (January 4th) and is taking 14 zeros to finalize his retirement plans and attending SoRuck before he starts hiking in earnest beginning the 26th/27th.

Seriously... yes SGT Rock is indeed on the trail. As of 11:06 am he hiked away from the parking lot of FS42 and my puppy and I drove back home. He's actually only got until Monday/Tuesday to hike this time, so he's not gonna make it all the way to Davenport gap this trip out. We have his car stashed for him about 50 miles up trail.

Yep... Let's see I left Springer at 11:10am and pulled into my driveway at 2:35pm, so that's a little over 3 hours with one pit stop along the way. Not too bad, but I'm tired this evening.

In March of 2006, in a campsite, just a little north of Neel Gap, I started a fire because it was soooo DAMN COLD. How cold was it? It was so cold I couldn't even feel the heat of the fire, I had to put my hands right next to the flame (almost touching) to feel the slightest warmth; it was accompanied by a wind that would blow right through you. All I could do was crawl in mysleeping bag, with all my clothes on, and try and survive the night.

Jan. 1 is pretty extreme for a start date, any way you slice it. I suspect most folks who drop off at Neels (regardless of date) never thought the thing through at all, and had little to no actual experience with the AT or with backpacking.

True, this is why I live in Florida:D ; but I also know it was COLD COLD COLD, because in the mornings, for the first couple weeks my water containers were frozen and a thick coat of frozen condensation was all over the inside of my tent.
That's why I would never start this early, Rock will have to put up with that for some time.

As long as your water containers were not in your sleeping bag, where they should have been, when they froze, then you should be okay. :)

Who's with me? ;)I always procrasitnate getting out of mine. :D I took an overnighter with Doctari to Red River Gorge earlier in the fall, I had worked night shift the night before, he had jsut got done working a 24 hour shift. We were both in our respective hammocks by sundown, around 1830. Neither of us was up and at 'em for breakfast until after 0930.

I got a spot report about 5pm from Survivor Dave. He got to see SGT Rock at Martin's Dixie Depot and have a cup of coffee with him. SD says Rock is in great spirits, hiking strong and has plenty of food.
Oh yeah there was also something about duct tape holding a seam together, but I'll let Rock explain that one later, since I didn't get the whole story. ;)
I got a spot report about 5pm from Survivor Dave. He got to see SGT Rock at Martin's Dixie Depot and have a cup of coffee with him. SD says Rock is in great spirits, hiking strong and has plenty of food.
Oh yeah there was also something about duct tape holding a seam together, but I'll let Rock explain that one later, since I didn't get the whole story. ;)

I went to see him just as a long shot. He had his pack on and ready to head down the road to the Trailhead. I walked toward him and said "I know you!". He squinted and he said "Survivor Dave!".
This was the first time I've met him. We had coffee and shot the breeze for a while. He is in great spirits and hiking strong. I dropped him off at the trailhead and was stoked about finding camp for the night.

Actually, I was headed back from Neels and made a right to go to Martin's Dixie Depot instead of left to go home. I got a little insider info that he might be there, but not sure of the time.
The store is about 15 miles North of Woody Gap.

Just got off the phone with SGT Rock. He's stopped at a restaurant having some dinner right now before he makes camp for the night. He did 16.5 miles today and says he has a little over 12 to do tomorrow to get to his car.
He's laughing and having a great time. He told me more about the pants failure, it was his old rain pants that he's had for Years. They have finally bit the dust. I'll still let him explain exactly how he killed them because he tells it so much better. LOL.
The only other gear failure he's had was a mile in at the shelter on Springer. He pulled his "Light My Fire" spoon out of his food bag and it broke on him. All we can guess was the weather was just too cold for the plastic or something. Really odd.

I had to get a spoon from Martins also when I forgot mine. I carved a spoon out of wood but it just didn't work as good.

The ladies that work at the Dixie Depot are great. Filled all my water bottles and were very concerned that I didn't eat all my food fast enough. Really liked that BMT hikers were coming through there.

Yep - Those things are useless. Paul Bunyan broke two on our hike. A 79 cent lexan spoon is all one needs. Mine lasted the entire hike.

Howdy all, gee I never knew I was so loved LOL...
This is sort of why I stealthed out - it just felt right.
OK, short SITREP on my hike - I'll get the photos and details up in a bit...
Day 1 - I got to Springer at about 1130 and thee temp was about 20F. I signed the register and got my rock with a few pics, then got off that cold place to go to the Shelter and use the privy and get some lunch. I broke the LMF-POS pulling it out of the food bag. After a short lunch (wasn't very hungry yet) I walked up and started the BMT. It was a good hike, getting to Long Creek Falls ahead of schedule, not feeling like stopping I hiked on further. Total milage was about 8.6 + the 1.1 "approach" for the BMT/AT thru-hiker. That night it was 18F as I smoked my Cuban cigar, toasted with a small drink of bourbon, and burned my 4 sheets of paper for my itenerary - the only fire I have had on the trail as there is still a burn ban. I went to bed and was sweating fairly quickly - hammocks can work for the prepared in the teens ;)
Day 2 - late start as I didn't want to get out of a warm place for a cold place. The temp was around 20F. Packed up and got moving. On the hike down to Toccoa bridge I saw the first real snow - up until then it was all dust. On the hike down it was ankle deep ontop of thick fallen leaves and the trail was a steep down hill - so it ended up being like dancing on greased ball bearings. On one of them I started to fall, so I buckled my knees to go backwards instead of forwards and I ripped my rain pants I was using as a wind blocker. The rip was from the bottom of the waste band to just above the knee. I just hiked like that until I got to the Dixi Depot where I taped them together and got a disposable spoon as they didn't sell either of those things there. I spent and hour catching up about that poor girl with the ladies that worked there. Then as I walked out to leave the owner comes out and unloads a 30 round magazine from an AR15 so I had to stop to watch. After we talked I was walking away when Survivor Dave showed up, so I ended up spending another hour there hanging out with him. Finally I did get back on the trail - and the lunch, plus the straight upness slowed me down so I finally called it quits at 11.5. More on that night in my journal to come...
Day 3 - I planned to get up early and hike far to make up some miles - it didn't work out exactly as I planned. But I did get a 16.3 mile day in by dreaming of good food. I made it into the Aska bridge area after dark and got a big old dinner. Then I went off and stealthed with the hammock nearby. In this case the ground was not good for a tent and a hammock was the perfect way to stealth.
Day 4 - got off early for a 3 mile road walk then over Rocky and Rich Mountains. The slopes today were more like AT walking so it was a little easier. Then back to another road walk for a few more miles before I got a dog sent after me by a little old lady. I just kept my cool and everything turned out fine. I ended up making it to the car at about 1400 after a 12 mile day. But, since I wanted to explore I did some shot slacking of the trail in the area and bumped it up to a 13.6 mile day.
So now I am at 50.1 on the BMT.I should be back on the trail next weekend and I'm thinking about a 58 mile section then.
AAR comments -
1. I brought too much food for that section. That part of the BMT presents a good oportunity for chow at 17.9, 36.5, and 48.5. A good hiker can have a hot meal every day if they hike it right. Add to that I am not in hiker hunger mode yet - so in 4 days I have eaten less than 2 days of my rations.
2. The hammock system works. Don't screw with it.
3. Actually had too much clothing. I was thinking I would be more cold natured than I am. But with temps in the teens I have things I haven't even worn yet in my clothing bag to keep warm with. I'm not sure I am ready to give them up. Big winner was the field jacket liner - that with a wind shirt are kings of staying warm in most weather.
4. Globe stove was not used. Not only because of the fire ban, but because I just haven't found a reason to fire it up even if I could. I dumped it.
5. LMF Spork POS. I will not get another one based off my experience and Blissful's reccomendation. I have an old plastic one with hundreds of days use on it somewhere around here.
6. The Provent pants were great - until they ripped. The cut was not good for someone active as I have had some issues with them in the past. Based on that I am thinking Frogg Togg pants as a replacement. But I will explore other options.

Not that time. But at the end of the 3rd day my gas could have done it. It was so bad I almost got out of the hammock just to get away from it. But I think it worked in with my stealth plan as no one would want to investigate that sort of smell up close.
I know what you mean........get use to that gas, its a good thing too..........means everything is working properly and your body is removing the bad stuff as well...............

I have thought about it. I'm not sure he ever actually had to do it on the trail. As for my experience in GA so far, unless GA gets a bunch of rain I am not likely to need them in the next 4 day hike. Chances are that I'll not need them until I get somewhere wet like TN/NC where we got a butload of rain in the last 2 months. But it is something to think about.
On the other end of this - I was thinking about you HOI the other day when I was coming down Rich mountain and looking at some blow downs. They were some tricky ones - leaners, some soda straws, and a couple of end binders. I bet we could have a time clearing that mountain.

I saw a place in Maine like this; the leaning trees were all over the place. It's really scary walking under them, especially when the wind is blowing
I don't mind seeing the odd one, but a bunch of them in an area is disturbing.
I've never actually seen one come down though. This past weekend the trees were heavily laden with snow and there was snow and some small branches coming down with the thaw but nothing serious. There was one big leaner that kept me from doddling. :)

If I would have stayed in I would be an E9 Sergeant Major by now but would owe them at least 2 more years, probably would end up being 4 by the time it was all over. I would have stayed in but that also ment moving the family again. And they have been shuffled enough.
Add to that Hacksaw gave me some good advice about all this while I was in Iraq that I couldn't ignore. He is good people.

I just looked at it. It doesn't look too bad. The plan is to be on the trail Saturday thru Tuesday.

Although it depends on how much rain you're talking about. I'm considered weird for not carrying an umbrella to rush from the car into the grocery store. I always say that I'm mean, but not mean enough to melt in the rain.

When I got back from Iraq (both times) I would go outside whenever it rained. Nothing like walking around your own yard in the grass bare-foot with a cup of hot fresh ground coffee playing with the dog in the rain. That is America.
I hate rain where there is ice already on the ground, makes a simple walk to the coffee shop a battle for the ages, Slippin' and slidin' everywhere, and just when you think you have your grip on the ince, WHAM! And down you go.

Did you really have a nightmare about army guys and shots being fired or did you hear something in the woods? That kind of alarmed me when I read it in the journal. You can get vivid dreams out in the woods, I know. I once dreamt on the trail I was following white blazes through this huge museum.
I'd like to hear some. Just rain so far on the hike.
I kick myself whenever I hear rain drops starting to fall on a hike, then i keep moving realizing there is nothing I can do.

If it ain't raining, we ain't training. We used to joke that there was a sensor at the gate to the Motor Pool. As soon as you rolled out the gate someone switched the rain on.
