View Full Version : NYT Article: To Walk a Landscape is to Know It
There's a great "Personal Journeys: On Foot" article in tomorrow's New York Times Travel section (really out today near NYC) -- "To Walk a Landscape is to Know It". Charming story by an Englishman who enjoys wandering. He quotes an old "tramp" who says: "Less you have the more you have." I wish I knew how to provide a link this article. A pleasure to read. Sure explains how I feel better than I've ever been able to. Look for it...
Walking for sheer pleasure is a big tradition in Europe. My wife and I did a few day hikes on the so-called Coastal Path in Devon and Cornwall. It's an entirely different philosophy from the AT. It's a 300 mile long path, but 90% of it is easy walking. Very nicely graded. Some sections are paved path. Easy access, great views most of the time. Nice towns, pubs and other facilities along the way. No need for a back pack, really. You see families and couples with children and grannies walking together frequently. It's completely lacking the machismo element of the AT. Refreshing. Here's a sample view.

I walk the AT for buffets and beer
Shall I part my hair behind? Do I dare to eat a peach?
I shall wear white flannel trousers, and walk upon the beach.
I have heard the mermaids singing, each to each.

My cousins hiked Hadrian's Wall Path and then most of West Highland Way. I have done a few dayhikes on Hadrian's WallPath. It is quite easy for us as it goes along the backside of my father' old farm. I really enjoy tramping in the UK as well as Fellwalking - Much different experience than here in the states.
