Yes, look at a down or artificial-down jacket. Fleece is heavy and bulky for the warmth.

Fleece only has one upside: it's cheap. You can go to a department or thrift store and get some cheap ones--there's very little difference between those and the ones that the outdoor companies produce. Fleece is heavy and bulky though.

Down or synthetic insulated jackets (check Montbell or Western Mountaineering) are much better, but are also more expensive.

Montbell UL down inner jacket. Warmer, lighter, compresses much smaller.
Little pricey compared to a fleece jacket. I have the Montbell Alpine light down jacket and love it.

I don't know if they still make them but I'm in love with my Marmot Rime synthetic sweater. Very light, very packable, very water resistant and very quick drying.

Microfleece is thin enough to let the moisture through?

whats the difference between micro fleece and fleece?

micro fleece is generally light weight, not as bulky as some other fleece, and has shorter fibers from my experience.

Sorry to go off topic with that but it's better than any sh#tkicker fleece I've ever seen.

If you are on a budget, I suggest Military Jacket liners. Very light, very compressible and CHEAP:

I've seen as low as $5 in the Army/Navy store. (You may have to sew these as they do not have the buttons like the ones in the link. They button into the M-65 army jacket)

I use the similar army pants liner to good effect.

Do they have those in Australia? That's where the OP is.

Ah..I did not notice the location of the poster. But, I look at many of these posts as general info for many people.

In any case, I've seen similar DUTCH military liners. I suspect the Australian equivalent of a military surplus store may sell something like a field jacket liner ; if not from the US than from another country...maybe even Australlia.
