You're going to get a million different answers but I usually use about 2 32oz nalgenes full.

i started out using 2 nalgenes, but got tired of going to the spring at night and in the morning, so started carrying a 2 liter platypus for use at night. would fill the nalgenes and the platypus and just save the nalgenes for the next day.

Usually, I would fill my 1 liter Nalgene, plus my 3 liter collapsable Nalgene, and I'd have enough water for dinner, clean-up, breakfast and get started in the morning.

Same here (except that I use wide mouth Nalgene "Cantene" containers so I can screw them onto my First Need filter).

I agree that the amount would vary a lot between hikers.

In warm weather if you can cook with water you've been carrying as opposed to new water, it will save fuel.

Also, I try to camp near water and drink a lot in the evening and in the morning so that I'm well-hydrated for at least part of each day, even if it means leaving my tent in the middle of the night to urinate.

1 nalgene, 1 two liter platy.

Fill both before leaving in AM.

And never complain about having to fill your water. I stop at just about every chance I get.......I'd rather take a few minutes rest every chance and have max capacity, versus not taking the time and running out of water in an area that should have water, but doesn't.

3- 16.9 fl oz and a nalgene usually leaves me about satisfied for the night and usually into the hike the next day and sometimes I have some more water in my platypus if not i just have a dry throat till I get to water ~GB

Hiker Trash answer-one 32 oz gator-aid bottle and two 16 oz soda bottles (I can always slip them in somewhere in the pack-usually next to the 1st aid kit containing the leeches and the morphine patches) . I don't use water for cleanup-alchohol wipes.
