And then I showed the stuff to my wife about how we would get paid, what to do if I died with that form, and other important stuff. About then it hit her it was all real.

Speak for yourself... This week is going incredibly fast over here in Nashville, TN..... Too much to do and not enough time!

Rock,

Sincere appreciation for your 22 1/2 years of service to this country.....

And Hurrah to Dixie for being there behind the man.... My father was USMC, and it was my mother that pressed the uniforms, starched the clothes, and made the boys from my father's unit feel welcome at his house....

Toujour Pret to your Semper Fidelis. No matter what color the uniform we wear or how many jokes there are about interservice rivalry, we always have each other's backs! We can always find a common bond in our desire to keep our nation and its people free. I think Shakespeare said it best in writing:

"We few, we Band of Brothers. For he who sheds his blood with me shall be my brother."

Sorry to get all sentimental and stuff. Rock, enjoy your Maker's. Dixicritter, you should be just as proud as Rock is and should be equally congratulated. Yours was not an easy job. Thanks for keeping the fighting man fighting!

SGT Rock
01-24-2008, 19:21
Hell no. I have appointed myself the 1SG of the AT. Hence the rank.

As for sentimental, I'm already there.

From my favorite cav thing:

Halfway down the trail to hell
In a shady meadow green,
Are the souls of all dead troopers camped
Near a good old-time canteen
And this eternal resting place
Is known as Fiddler’s Green.

Marching past, straight through to hell,
The infantry are seen,
Accompanied by the Engineers,
Artillery and Marine,
For none but the shades of Cavalrymen
Dismount at Fiddlers' Green.

Though some go curving down the trail
To seek a warmer scene,
No trooper ever gets to Hell
Ere he's emptied his canteen,
And so rides back to drink again
With friends at Fiddlers' Green.

And so when man and horse go down
Beneath a saber keen,
Or in a roaring charge or fierce melee
You stop a bullet clean,
And the hostiles come to get your scalp,
Just empty your canteen,
And put your pistol to your head
And go to Fiddlers' Green.

Tomorrow I won't be short anymore. I'll be GONE. I know that you're excited to get on with your thru, Rock. In all honesty, does leaving the Army after so long bring about mixed emothions for you at all? It's been a huge part of your life and your family's life for so long that I'm sure you're not just turning your back and saying "See ya!".

Private Crock, my sincere congratulations and a big thank you for your service to America, land of the free, home of the brave, I salute you Sarge. Dixie enjoy the time while he is on the trail just as you have when he has been deployed, cause after that he will be home all the time. That can get old real quick when a mere Private tries to tell you "how to do it". Now short timer learn how to hide under that rock.

It is hard to just leave. I hope that I can somehow contribute to the cause after retirement. I've put my resume in with the ROTC department of the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.

It just means I will have to shave off the hippy beard if I end up doing that.

I've heard it used. We were in Iraq and the first batch of replacements came in 2003. One of the privates who had less than 6 months in the unit and had just got there before we deployed was with me when I went to receive them. He started calling the new privates FNG. I could hardly keep from bustin' up.

We used it all the time for Marines who passed indoc and got orders when they showed up on their first day for check in. The poor souls who hadn't been to airborne before they came to us were "leg FNG's". Those guys had it rough. :D

I've heard that in certain theatres and units during WW II and earlier, the old hands didn't spend much time with the new reinforcements, because they tended to disappear rather rapidly, and it just wasn't worth the emotional capital to get close to them. I don't know how long it took before the new ones were themselves old hands. Probably not long in the trenches of WW I, or in bombers in WW II, or in fighters in the Battle of Britain. War is a hard business. I'm fortunate that my time was between wars for my country, although we haven't been without war in the world for a long time. Young warriors going off to war for the first time often take it to be a great adventure, and for some, it is. My uncle, who just died of cancer a few months ago, served in the Royal Artillery in the Northern Frontier and Ethiopia and the Middle East before and during WW II. He never felt better than during his years of service. My father served in the RCN and very rarely said anything about his service. He served on convoy escorts on the Atlantic run, mostly Mid-Atlantic, fighting weather and seamanship problems. I think his greatest moment was salving a disabled freighter, and action for which he and his command were cited in dispatches. Those experiences were half a century ago, but I don't think the reality of war has changed much since then. Bigger bangs and different tactics, but the life cannot have changed much. It doesn't matter if you have a PX or whatever nearby if you are bound to your duty. Someone, maybe Rock, said that it was rather like being institutionalized. Not like, Rock: Exactly the same. Same confinement, same random violence, same noise and constant assault on one's dignity and person. And yet it sometimes ennobles its victims at the same time as it makes beasts of others.

Don't know why that phrase "FNG" set me off like this. I've no wish to go off to fight a war, or to defend my country should the need arise. Should the need have arisen before I was past it, I probably would have, like so many have done before me. But I am a FNG here, and I have spent most of my time being a FNG almost everywhere I have been, because I am an outsider and a black sheep. And there's no real need to get to know me, because I will not be here long enough to matter. I'm late enough in life to realize that we are all FNGs here on Earth, and none of us stay long enough to get to know very much or very many of the other people here. Pay no attention to me, but stop a minute and look carefully at the next FNG you meet, and see if you can't see the spark of a human life, what people sometimes call a soul. That's all there is. We are none of us more than that. And yet we are all so much more than we can realize. So much more than we can realize.
