Some of us come here for serious discussion. To learn, answer questions, ask questions, offer hiking advice to newbies and also to learn about new things and techniques out there.

The smileys to me, were always a distraction and seemed to be used most by those who make many irrevelant posts and short snide remarks that seem to have no use except to take up bandwidth. (in other words, those who have too much time on their hands and spend it on all on whiteblaze)

Of course sometimes, they could be used to say something or put some emotion on your post. But, too many abuse them so much that they don't have the same meaning anymore.

People who do things in excess so often ruin it for everybody. IMHO of course!

Well here is my opinion on smiley’s. I few are not bad if used in the right manner. There are some people here that over do the smile’s. Personally I wished I had never added the extras smiley’s to the site when we started it. I remember SGT Rock not wanting me to add anymore. I guess he has changed his out look smiley’s since then from what I see on his web site and that is his prerogative :).

Like a few said a lot of people come to the web site for serious discussion and some come because they have no life outside of WhiteBlaze, LOL :). The web site was created for people to come to and read and share information about preparing for thru hiking or section hiking the AT. Not to read post filled with smiley’s. If you want a crap load of smiliey’s then go to one of the kiddy web sites .

If I wanted it to be a kiddy web site I would add more smiley’s as it is now we have to many problems trying to keep people in line. I think smiley’s is one less thing we need to worry about :datz. No disrespect to Rock or Dixie but if you want to post smile’s and that is all you want to do then go to the HikingHQ web site and have a ball :jump.

While smileys can be overdone easily and make a site seem like a kiddy site, as used at Rock's site, they generally add an idea without making it necessary to type an extra sentence or two. Let's face it, proportionally there is more serious material on HikingHQ than on WB. It's a fact.

I use them at this site frequently to denote something I've said is humor or tongue-in-cheek or to denote joy or happiness or sadness. The 'thinking smiley' saves me a ton of typing by noting that I'm not sure about a particular topic and the 'confused smiley' does the same by saying 'Please explain..."

Some benefactor offered up this page earlier in this thread: http://www.appalachiantrailservices.com/vbulletin/misc.php?do=getsmilies&editorid=vB_Editor_001

Open it, save it to favorites, keep it open as a separate page whenever you're in a posting mood, then highlight the desired smiley and copy it, and finally - paste it into the desired WB post.

Try it a couple of times. It's only four clicks more than what we do already. Try it. You'll love it. http://www.appalachiantrailservices.com/pics/smilies/tt1.gif

I have used a few of my favorites from elsewhere for some time. I had no idea that ATTroll had a problem with this - I know Rock and Dixi don't. Rock likes the smileys and is responsible for the extra ones already on this site. Dixi uses them frequently. Personally, I don't see it as as disrespectful YMMV

Perhaps you missed post #4... :)I saw it but thought you were saying it tongue-in-cheek. I know you joke around with us on a regular basis. As I see it, the 'fun' part of the site is what keeps the regulars with a lot of knowledge coming here. It gets boring real fast answering the same questions over and over and doing nothing else. This is why the strictly on-topic hiking sites don't have nearly the participation, standing or rating with services like Alexa that this site has.

I was half-kidding and half serious. I voted for no mo' smilies. Ain't needed, too distracting. Some similies do help clarify the intent of the comment, since we cannot see facial expressions. Some have used smilies from other sites in the past in a manner that's added something desirable. ms doolittle especially made good use of them last year in some threads in which I participated.

To see how people can get carried away with them, all one needs to do is go to hikinghq and look at what was being posted while WB was down.

I believe it's wise to limit the number of smilies in a particular post. Maybe already too many are permitted.

Although I voted against additional smilies, a few used carefully and maybe even a few new smilies wouldn't detract from the quality of posts here.

Limit what's available to only those on a menu here and the number per post and post them only when they add something.

It might also be a good idea to modify the software to not count smilies within a quote toward the total permitted.

The Weasel
01-13-2008, 14:22
There are a variety of reasons, but perhaps the best is the 'One picture is worth a thousand words.'

It was a little exhilarating at Hiking HQ to find so many available, and I think that in a troubling thread - we all were upset about the hack - they helped let off steam. I rather doubt they would be overused here, and they might make otherwise tense or upsetting posts easier to bear.

Troll, the day to say that WB is 'serious' only is past, particularly if you allow the policial forums: This is a boisterous, fun, serious, thoughtful, outrageous, gentle, wild group of people, and it would add a new and good dimension to allow more 'smileys'. And it may happen anyhow, as Bearpaw has shown.

Do it.

Except for ATTroll and BearPaw, few have said why they feel the smileys should not be added.

Actually I LIKE smilies, but I realized that as I was going on my smiley bender that I sort of WAS making ATTroll's point for him.

Warning: http://www.appalachiantrailservices.com/pics/smilies/offtopic.gif http://www.appalachiantrailservices.com/pics/smilies/rant.gifThe catch is, I don't primarily come to WB for "serious" discussion. If I want to seriously discuss issues pertaining to the AT, then yes, WB is my preferred medium. But for general backpacking discussion, there are many other sites which are much more straight-forward like The Lightweight Backpacker, Backpacking Light, or even the often-maligned Practical Backpacking. For non-AT-info, they are much easier to search.

But after last summer when fire and injuries skunked me on my planned hikes out west on the Tahoe Rim Trail and John Muir Trail, the finest gear I had ever carried didn't help me finish those trails. And I found I pretty much was burnt out on gear. I gave notice at REI so I could hike on weekends (and wound up with the offer of just working weeknights - which is a great deal). So now I backpack at least one weekend a month.

And in the meantime, I remember, as Lone Wolf often said on my '99 thru-hike, "It's just walkin'". I come here because this is a place where I can laugh and socialize and sometimes offer genuinely helpful advice to folks who ask serious questions about the AT. This is sort of my "happy place" when I'm not on the trail somewhere. http://www.appalachiantrailservices.com/pics/smilies/10900.gif For me, the smileys are perfectly in keeping with the happiness I get from being here. http://www.appalachiantrailservices.com/pics/smilies/rant.gif

Thanks for the clarification, BearPaw. I go to most of those other sites about once a week and catch up on what is being discussed there. Maybe smiley-friendly forums or threads where any smilies can be posted isn't a bad idea from the perspective of WB users. It would allow us to explore new ways in which to use them and to introduce new smilies which might be added to our menu for general use.

While I enjoyed off-site smilies when they were permitted and used them myself, I don't know anything about their downside to which attroll has alluded. Maybe he would explain his objections in greater detail in non-technical terms.

Try it. You'll love it. http://www.appalachiantrailservices.com/pics/smilies/tt1.gifWant to see something funny with smilies.I have a forum for local folks in Western NC.Look at some of these post discribing polititions http://wncforum.com/showthread.php?t=309

Just reading through this thread on smiley's tells me that you people have way to much time on your hands if you coming here and worrying about posting smiley's.

Troll, don't you know WB threads never end, they just go on until the mods get fed up and put a lock on it. :)

At this point in time (Monday afternoon) there are 78 votes in the poll, and 50% favor adding some or all of the smileys that are at Hiking HQ (and which I think are a part of the default settings for this forum software), and 41% who say 'no'. The posts seem to be similarly divided.

Of our moderators, Troll has indicated that he doesn't changing is a good idea, since it would detract from the 'serious' aspect of this site. Rock hasn't weighed in, although I think he would have some sympathy for adding some/all of the ones that are available on Hiking HQ, which is also 'serious' but just as welcoming a 'campfire' as WB is. Dixi hasn't made it clear (to me, and sometimes I'm dense, I know) whether she'd add some or not, and no one speaks for Dixi except for Dixi. They, of course, are the only real 'voters'.

But unlike Kirby, I don't think making suggestions angers Troll. (If they did, he'd be on me like flies on....well, sugar or whatever, since the first suggestion I ever made to him was to become the Administrator of WhiteBlaze, a long, long time ago. Especially after this weekend, if he doesn't bear me a grudge for that, he probably should!) Actually, in my experience, he (and Rock and Dixi, all of them) listens to what us peasants suggest with real care. We're lucky here. This isn't a "my way or highway" forum. Thanks, Troll and Dixi and Rock.

But I think it would be appropriate to do at least a trial run with all the smileys. I don't know if they could be restricted to some subforums (such as Politics) or not, which might be hard. Or if they could be tried for the entire site for, say, a couple weeks to see if they ruin the site or are fun. (If tried like that, let the trial period recognize that the first week we'll all just go totally barking crazy with them and won't settle down for several days!)

Why? WB isn't "serious serious." It's not like the old Trailplace, where even cracking jokes could get you banned. This site is serious, but it's also raucous, bizarre (did someone say, "Where's Minnesota Smith?"), helpful, funny, sad (and I wish it weren't, for things like Meredith, but we put posts up not just about 'be careful this way' but we care about her, and others, as real people) and a whole lot more. Smileys can add another dimension to all of those, sometimes adding gentleness in a little cartoon to otherwise harsh words, or a gentle admonition (is there a "Weasel, stuff it!" one yet?)and a lot more.

WB is a work of art in progress, and we are all, in different ways, artists scribbling on its sketchbook. Yes, Rock, Troll and Dixi are the 'supervising' artists. I hope they'll let the rest of us give it a try and see if it doesn't make WB even better than it is today.

But unlike Kirby, I don't think making suggestions angers Troll. ...http://hikinghq.net/forum/images/smilies2/withstupid.gif
What does anger people is that when after they tell you no, you continue to try to sell them something like a pushy salesman.

There's actually a great compromise afoot regarding smilies. If you can figure it out, you can use lots of new oneshttp://hikinghq.net/forum/images/smilies2/eviltongue.gif.

These are the default ones that come with the forum software.
:confused::rolleyes::p:D:o:(:):mad:;):cool::eek:

There is really no need to add anymore smiles when you can import them into you post here from HQ or other web sites.

Why not use the bandwidth from the other web sites rather then ours.

Weasel,

With all due respect counsellor, that was some oration on a very trivial topic. Gator has a point, it takes less time to borrow a smilie than you just spent talking about it. Not hard at all.

Well, me, I read Troll's earlier comment to be that he didn't want to see more smileys, period. Period as in, "no." And then others seemed to me to sort of jam it to him by just importing anything they wanted, and now a couple of you just want to be less than understanding of why I thought it might be appropriate to say, "Hey Troll ! Can we do something different?" I also thought it might be nice to recognize that all of our moderators may have preferences, and since one seemed reluctant, it would be appropriate to wait until they all weighed in. Sorry that two of you would rather be insulting to me than realize (or even try to) why I did what I did.

As for Troll, thanks for telling me what's OK. I appreciate that.

The Weasel does have a way of making one want to :datz sometimes with his incessant arguing of a point does he not? ;) He does have it correct in that I didn't state one way or the other my stand on the issue, I did so on purpose.:dance My personal feeling is that this is not a big deal. I don't feel that smilies make a site any less serious or the lack of them make a site any more serious.

I think that as long as the members enjoy the site that's all that matters. Because without our members we don't have a site in the long run. Just like everyone does things differently out on the trail, everyone posts differently on WhiteBlaze. How boring it would be if we all posted alike.:sun
