I would bet they keep your arms warm.

I suppose if you're light complected, they could provide sun protection for those times you're not tucked into the treeline.

And of course, they're good for style points, though I'm not sure if they would earn or lose you points on many trails.....

Look like some kind of fancy arm warmers to me. I use them biking. I thought about taking them backpacking instead of a long sleeved shirt. But I did not.

Ah, I have used them. I do some cycling and I borrowed a friend's pair for a cold weather century (sp). They're good for biking when you don't want to bring a small pack and you can just tuck them into your back jersey pocket. I would guess though, that for backpacking it might just be better to add the 3oz or so and get the whole shirt.

I guess if you got bored you could use them for treking pole fencing practice.

Nean used to use something that he made that was a shirt with all but the sleeves and collar removed. So, it was similar.

He has hiked a lot so anything that he does is considered worth thinking about anyway.

I would guess that folks who use hiking sticks sometimes get colder arms than us who do not. ???

keeping an open mind is pretty important in this game.
but $30?? bucks?

I think you could take some old synthetic long underwear and create your own.

A note to those who believe that wearing synthetic arms would stop the sun: after hiking the CDT (where the sun is often shining on you), a few years ago with a long sleeve synthetic top, I noticed afterwards that there was no tan line where the shirt started. My tan was as if i hadn't any long sleeve shirt on.

I used to use something similar when I was into bicycling. I had leg warmers too. I guess those fleece arm warmers with a fleece vest could replace a fleece jacket and give you more options.
