View Full Version : Tennessee/North Carolina/Virginia Winter Advisory

Tennessee Viking
01-16-2008, 16:01
For those crazy enough to be out and about in the Tennessee, NC, and Virginia areas, be prepared for dramatic weather change. Forecast calls for a mix of rain, snow, sleet, and freezing rain with high gusts. While forecast calls for lows in the 20s in the cities, many are expecting temps to drop as low as 5 to 0 degrees in higher elevations.

The section that I know coming from that way that is always notorious for bad weather is through the stretch right when you cross TN/NC line. But you should be okay if you're not coming through until Friday. :)

I betcha the Mainiacs and northern New Englanders don't feel the need to restock every time a snowflake is spotted.

Kirby, when you are speaking to southerners, you can't say "you all" if you want them to understand, it's "y'all". ;)

If you've never driven on the road around the Park, take care. It's narrow, steep (in places) and winding.

It was amusing watching the Weather Channel last night. Had some "webcam" shots of Atlanta and their record snow. The guy said the I's should be fine, but in the afternoon.

People here rush the store every time. I don't get it. The driving here is complicated by people with a SUV mentality. Getting going is not the issue, stopping is!

Well, gotta go play errand boy, and run to the store.

Off to Grandfather mountain Sunday. TO THE TOP! Do you hike up the profile trail from 105? That is a great hike.
I ran 5 miles to the top of Grandfather this summer in the Bear Hill Run. That was the first time up the entrance. It was awesome. Ran past Forest Gump View. I do not plan to repeat this insanity.

I waked up with a couple of inches of snow capped by about half an inch of ice.
My house is about 2,000 ft elevation and I live in a notch between two higher peaks.
Big Canoe is located between Jasper and Dawsonville. I ain't going anywhere 'till it gets warmer and I can get the ice off an incredibly steep driveway!

From my ridgetop Tipi I would often see Grandfather Mountain way off in the distance, always covered in snow and ice, and windy. How windy? A couple of years ago it set it's own new wind record at somewhere around 200 mph. When I got hit with some nasty wind and snow on my 3300 foot ridge, I knew Grandfather was getting hit worse many times over.

At least in the cold parts of New York State, they keep a good supply of groceries all winter--ready to stay at home for a couple of days at any time during the winter.
