(Posted this in another thread as well)

If you pause his video interview http://tinyurl.com/2oycrh at about 1:07 you can see his mileage plans for the first 17 days of his "hike" (though you must interpolate the first days mileage). If you start doing the math you'll notice the daily mileage figures are roughly the same for northern GA and the Stecoahs/Nantahalas as they are for sections farther north in SNP. At day 15 he's at Tom's Run Shelter, 1084 miles, just short of the midpoint. I suppose he's going to plan on right around 72 miles/day in the Whites and Maine as well. To really do this he'd need to plan a number of close to 100 mile days on the "easier" or should I say more suitable sections for flat out running that occur in some areas from VA through VT.

He's simply divided up the miles with no allowance for terrain, trail conditions, or footing. What does he think - that the AT is a groomed, graded bridle path suitable for horses like some of the trails out west? He has no clue.

Slow-"....He may also think before his start.... sobo is better for him?"His only hope to make 30 days isn't NOBO vs. SOBO but either Delta or Greyhound.;)

The only question is whether he will drop off the trail when he starts falling behind schedule (after the first day) or whether he'll continue to see if he can just barely break the record. My guess is Bryson will edge him out by a good many miles.:D

Well, if he read Strategic's post, I'd hope so. Why are you suddenly doubting him, slow? He's the underdog. Didn't you say earlier that you thought it was possible? Why try to alter his plan? Sounds like you have reconsidered. Strategic has it right, like it or not.

I can't believe that the reporter fell for that either. The math alone shows that it's patently impossible, even supported. To do that you'd have to average at least 72.5 miles a day with no zeros. That's hiking at an average of 3mph literally 24/7 for 30 days. An ultra-marathoner could do better of course, but even running at about 9mph (the best that competition U-Ms can do), you'd still need to do 8 hour days to make your pace. I seriously doubt that even the best U-Ms could keep that pace up for 30 days straight. It's one thing to do it in a 100km race, another to do that same race plus another 17km on top, then do it the next day...and the next...and, well...

He's got to be blowing smoke in this reporter's eyes, or at least we should all hope so. If he's serious, then he's also seriously deluded.

If you don't know true backpacking, then you don't know all the little ailments and injuries that can creep up on you from repetitive action.

Won't he really need to do 100 miles per day through the middle states in order to make up for those days up north where he can't reach 75 miles per day??

I wish him luck in whatever adventure he embarks upon, but I think with this he might have overextended himself.

I think ultras have already tried, and failed. They tended to do short days at high speeds, if I remember correctly. Didn't really go much faster than walkers, and they had full support, including massagers, food and a crash pad to sleep on. But, from my own experience, and that of any ultra athletes I've run across, minor injuries are most likely to do him in. But if he can take a hint while out there, he should be able to finish, if he wants to. If he wants to listen to his body and the trail, that is.

I hate to burst your bubble, but LW has thru-hiked the AT, and has run 50-mile races, and is planning for another one this spring. He's not just blowing smoke when he says this 30-day AT hike is BS.

LW knows a lot more about this hiking and speed-hiking thing that either you or Wild Cowboy do.

Who was it here on WB that said, "The trail dictates, you don't"? I always wanted to thank him for that chunk of wisdom.

Wolf:
I believe you are the one who said you are proud to not have thru-hike, correct (no sarcasm intended)?

Anyway, all I know is Wolf has WAY more miles that I do, Springer to Gorham twice? And I remember you mentioning something about at least one trip from Gorham to Katahdin.

My info is not based on any one on one conversation for anyone who is curious, just what I have seen. Either way, he has EXTENSIVE info about the trail.

Off my soap box now,
Kirby

L.WOLF,i would like to try a speed hike between 68-80 days this year or next. i know(or i heard)you dont think thruhikers should stay in towns. since i respect your thoughts and ideas,i was hoping you could tell me all aspects of a unassited hike. no slackpacking of coarse. but would mail drops be assisting? basically how would you do a unassited hike.. thanks crumb

i feel a through hike is just that. hiking end to end with no days off. all the way through. reality is you need to resupply so maildrops and hitching to towns to get them is cool. it's how i would do an unassisted hike. just like ward
