View Full Version : Favorite hot beverage while hiking

I am curious to what everyones favorite hot beverage is when they are out on the trail.

My preferance is a hot cup of Russina Tea that I have pre-mixed at home and store in a zip lock bag. And since I am diebetic, I make my Russian Tea with sugar free Tang and lemonade, instant tea, ground cloves and cinnamon. To me there is nothing more relaxing after a long day of walking weather I am cold or not, than this. If I have it, I might even a a shot of burbon or brandy too.

Water, but then I drink it at home also.

I prefer hot cider on the trail. Simple reason. Caffeine keeps me from sleeping at night, so I can't drink it in the evening. Cider offers no such offense. While it doesn't give you the morning boost, it's a good evening drink, especially in cool and cold weather.

Hot cider would have to be a close 2nd choice for me. I get that instant kind from Alpine.

All three. Coffee in the morning, decaf green tea or cocoa at night.

In really hot weather, none of the above. Chocolate-covered espresso beans give me my caffeine jolt.

Herbal tea throughout the day. Be it hot or cold I am sipping on it (I chill it in streams in the morning). Coffee in the morning. With lots of white in it!

In the morning I must have coffee. MUST. After that I'm happy with herb tea (Celestial Seasonings Sleepy Time or Tension Tamer). If I need a caffeine lift in the afternoon I'll use English Breakfast tea.

2. Add lemonade or orange drink mix (Tang, Crystal light, etc.)

I voted for Coffee because that is a staple. For pure pleasure, however, After dinner - spiced cider or hot jello, before dinner or at lunch - tomato soup hits the spot.

Ultra-lite backpacker's spiced tea

No sugar, no carbs, no fat, not much weight

2 tubs Crystal Lite Peach Tea
1 tub Crystal Lite Pink Lemonade
2 tubs sugar-free Tang
1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp ground cloves

The whole mix is about 1/3 cup.... and makes 9 liters worth! Put it in a spice container and shake it out to taste. (about 1/2 tsp per 8 oz)

Be careful, it is a lot lighter than sugar... so will blow in the wind!

Nothin' tops a nice warm cup of hot choclolate! coffee?? bleah!

Long as I am at it: The two places serving the finest cocoa ond or near the trail?

Dalton Diner in Dalton, MA and Inn and Long Trail in Vt. No one else even comes close.

But on trail I like Swiss Miss. Sometimes Nestle..as long as you can really taste the milk chocolate!

I travel no where without my bottle of irish whiskey. Bit I do add it to coffee in the winter.

No good scottish/irish hiker would be caught without a bottle of O'Whiskey.

I voted other. I mostly drink water. I should drink the odd electrolyte replacement beverage (beer is about ideal) but I'm mostly non-alcoholic, being diabetic (Type 2). However, one of the bonuses of trail walking, or any day-long exercise, is that I hardly need to worry about my blood sugar. Seems that strenuous exercise is as good (for me at least) as the pills I'm on (metformin and gluconorm). So I have soda when it is the most convenient liquid available, and tea when it's going. No coffee, don't like it, except when I'm in Europe, where they know how to make it. When I am knackered in camp at night, I usually press on until twilight, and then use the last light to make a no-fire, stealth camp, and crash for the night. I drink whatever water I need, and same in the morning, and then off again. Rest in the day whenever I feel like it, and generally don't bother to make a fire. I only eat more than snacks when I get to a trail town. Then look out! I'll have a few meals at once. And ice dream, milk shakes, you name it!

At home I drink tea with soya milk, but I'm trying to cut down.

I don't understand why hikers would drink non-sugar, aspartame or sucryl type diet pop. What's the point? That stuff has a bad aftertaste for me, it isn't very good for you (IMHO) and why wouldn't you take the free calories?

Sugar Free Cappuchino mix & vanilla caramel creamer is my favorite hot beverage to get me going in the morning. I rarely have hot drinks at night, but if I do it is either hot cocoa or hot cider (sugar free).

what we called jamoke in the marines was the coffee, creamer, cocoa and sugar from an mre or c-rat, all together

In the canteen cup and set on a hot engine block if possible..or those little trioxine(sp?) tablets.... Semper Fi!

I'll put in another vote for cider:D
The poll said "favorite hot beverage while hiking" and since I don't put ice in my Knob Creek, Moonshine or....

I like so many hot drinks it isn't going to be easy to pick just one...and it depends on the time of day and whether sleeping is in the future or activites that may result in a headache.

A winter favorite is Oregon Chai "The Original" Chai Tea Latte Mix and Bailey's I.C. -

:-? Though, I wonder how a recent batch of cider would be heated. Guess that would have to be called "Hot Apple Pie"
