For a tale of starting to hike, "The Ordinary Adventurer," by Jan Leitschuh can hardly be topped.
I'll second that, and i am now on "day 10".... :)

When I started about 10 years ago, I went to the Backpackers Shop in Sheffield, OH. I bought a Gregory pack and the salesman said you've gotta have this book: Trailside Guide, Hiking and Backpacking by Karen Berger. He was right. It was an excellent resource and had a waterfroof green cover. I see there is a new edition and she has a few other books. Happy Trails.........BrotherAL

I, like Lone Wolf, loved Bryson's book, but wouldn't recommend it as a Hiking and backpacking guide. Although, you could learn a great deal from their misadventures. I should dig it out and read it again. :banana:banana

Karen Berger and Chris Townsend both write good books on backpacking, both do ones at a complete beginner level and ones at a level for those beginning to plan long hikes.

+1 This is a great book IMO. I'm not too big of a reader but I read this book in about 2 days (which is amazing for me) and when I got finished I went back and read the last chapter again because I didnt want it to be over lol. If I didnt have to return it back to the library I would of read it again, without a doubt.

See if your library has the 2 volume set "Hiking the Appalachian Trail" by the Rodale Press (now out of print). Be sure to read the accounts of Dorothy Laker's (recently deceased :() 3 thru hikes. Plus lots of other good accounts.
a walk for sunshine by jeff alt is a great book not so much for learning but it will deffinitly put you in the spirit to stomp out some miles
