We need volunteers to monitor the trail for him passing through.

I'm voting for not finishing and exiting between Neels Gap and Harpers Ferry - not because I think he doesn't have the ability to do this, but because of the speed he plans to try to maintain. I believe a stress injury will force him off the trail.

Same here. A stress injury will get him.

SGT Rock
01-22-2008, 17:33
Well IMO I hope he does very well. From what I have seen the people that are successful at records have at least one attempt at a thru-hike at speed done so they can figure out what works well and what doesn't. Since WildCowboy has done some hiking and training but has yet to speed hike the AT before, I imagine he probably won't set a record on the first shot either as the averages are against him. If he does get behind his schedule I would hope that he continues to go ahead and finish as fast as possible and use that experience to plan another attempt.

I sincerely hope he adjusts his plans and enjoys his adventure no matter how long it takes him. I don't think we should be making fun of his effort.

A 2 min. mile would be more likely. Does anyone think they could do the last 5 days of this schedule? I would bet that alone would be impossible. I would have voted that he doesn't show, but after seeing the news clip I believe him to simply be looking for publicity. My bet is he shows and has an "injury" the first day and quits.

Pick whether you think it will occur before Neel's Gap (think downhill on Blood Mountain) or after, and vote accordingly. Quiting due to injury is still quitting.

Agree. That's why I voted "Finish thru, but no speed record." When he comes down to reality I hope he has a great hike.

He's been a bit of a braggart here about something which we all know can't be done. Even those who have RUN the trail with support haven't kept that kind of pace! But once reality sets in, we should just wish him well instead of gloating, advise him to HYOH, and be done with this.

Ok he gets pass Neels Gap but not much further. He'll back track to Neels and quit there at Walasi-Yi.

In all seriousnes I salute everyone who gives a thru-hike a serious attempt. I do however see no reason for encouraging potentially dangerous and definitely self-destructive speed attempts which has no basis in reality. I wish Lonnie realizes that even just completeing the trail regardless of the time required is still a grand thing to accomplish.

I hope he does well and pushes for the more realistic unsupported record when he realizes just how brutally difficult the AT is compared with the areas he's training in now.

I voted past Neels Gap but not to Harper's Ferry because I fear he will suffer an overuse injury (stress fracture, (Achilles) tendonitis, etc) if he tries to push very long at 70+ miles a day. I hope I'm wrong. I hope he slows down a bit before this happens.

fonsie
01-30-2008, 21:37
well evan if he doesnt finish in 30 days if he keeps an average of 50 miles a day. That will still beet the record of 47.5 days. To do it in 30 days is basicly no longer hiking its running and that to me is not hiking the AT in 30 day. So if he makes it I will not consider that a hike. Everyone that agrees needs to make sure it doesnt count as a record of hiking the AT.
