I just came across this article about a Louisville man that completed an AT thru-hike. Sounds like he made much his own gear and that he doesn't like shelters a whole lot.

Thanks! I've edited the title so as not to confuse any future readers of this thread.

As I search through Google News, I'm amazed at how many articles feature thru-hikers. Apparently, it's a media event in many towns---as it probably should be!

Here's another from the Richmond Palladium Item of Indiana:

That "Peter Tam" mentioned in the article is SOBOer "Waldo," whom Lilredmg and I spent the night with in the Walasi-Yi hostel at Neels Gap, GA.

Maryville, TN is about a 2 1/2 hr drive (depending which way & how fast you go) from the TN/NC stretch of the AT. It is a beautiful town just outside of Knoxville (ssw). The season changes are spectacular around here. And, there are a lot of trails to hike in the Cades Cove, Tellico Plains (Cherokee Nat'l Forest including North River, Citico, etc) and Hiwassee (Gee Creek, Unicoi, Star Mountain, etc) areas.

I live about 45 minutes (as the crow flies across the hollers & knobs) sse of Maryville on the McMinn/Monroe County line. It's gotta be Utopia because I live right in the center of the most beautiful sun rises on Earth.

Good article, thanks! Keep 'em coming!

I live in Maryville, TN and have all my life. I am also an avid hiker with an attempted thruhike in 2002. My journal of this hike is at Trailjournals.com.

Maryville, Tn is located about 30 minutes outside of the Great Smoky Mountains. It close enough to the Smokies to allow me to hike there all the time. Its a great way to prepare for a thru hike and to meet up with Thruhikers every year. If you are thruhiking thru the Smokies, be on the lookout for me.

PS: many of my sons pictures in the Smokies are on the Photo gallery here under Lil Reb.

Yes I know Wildcat. In fact he started his thru hike Saturday, Feb 28th at Amicola Falls. I spoke to him on the phone when he called me at work with some last minute questions. He should do well as he is experineced and in good shape.

Good Luck to you, Wildcat and remember:

THAR AINT NO MOUNTAIN HIGH ENOUGH !!
