Does anyone know what map I should buy for my 20-30mile trip south from Waynesboro? I am looking at buying a map from the ATC website, but the descriptions of each map doesn't help me as I'm not familiar with the areas in western VA.

Thanks. I was just looking at the maps section and not the package deals. I am probably better off getting a set like this now since I am about to get orders to Norfolk and could be hiking that area of the AT quite often.

The stretch of Trail bewtween Damascus and Rockfish Gap (Waynesboro) is found on 5 maps at present. For the stretch immediately South of Waynesboro, you want #5 in that set, titled: Appalachian Trail: Pedlar Ranger District/George Washinton Forest. The map is printed on two sides, and covers the stretch between Rt. 501 (near Glasgow VA) and Waynesboro, which is around 77 miles. You can get the map from the ATC or from a local Outfitter for around six bucks, or you buy the 5 maps together as a set, which may prove useful on future trips.

If it comes down to National Geo's and the ATC's I'd go with the ATC's.

I just got back from the outfitter, and by chance I was looking at the National Geo. Map of SNP. It's all on one map (front and back) vice about 5 or so for the ATCs' map set of the same area. I like the ATCs maps better, because the scale makes it eaiser to read.

The profiles on the NG maps are completely useless.

My favorite map of that area is the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club Map. More detail and side trails than the trail Conference/Forest Service maps. for

Their other maps, between southern PA and the James River in Virginia, are here:

Queary, let me put in a good word for the Tidewater Appalachian Trail Club for when you get to Norfolk.

Among other activities, they also have a cabin near the AT.

I've been looking for the same thing. I tried to download the ones that are here on WB, but for some reason it won't open on my computer.
