View Full Version : Treats for day hike?

Hi,

I think by mid-spring (as I put in another post) I will probably be doing all day hikes. I think with this high energy activity the dog will need a treat too. Right now I carry some assortment of dry snacks, freeze dried liver, and the dog roll type food cut in bits. I suppose a larger slice of the dog roll is an option? (BTW, I'm speaking of this: http://www.naturalbalanceinc.com/dogformulas/DFRolls.html )

Any other ideas?

Maybe they still sell individually- wrapped "burgers" of dogfood. I'm out of touch nowadays, but those were lightweight, convenient, and were touted to be complete meals.

Take whatever is the dog's favorite food.

Our dog will eat cheese no matter what. I just bring enough for both of us.

Like another dog I know? :)
(or me!) She loves those rolls too. Honestly they smell pretty good. Like a good quality sausage or something-- I haven't tasted though. :-)

Cat food is good, and light as well. Many SAR teams take dry cat food as a snack for the dogs, high in protien and carbs. The burger packets are good also.

I am surprised nobody mentioned it.

Easy to use Slim Jim. or Giant Slim Jim. Unused portion stays wrapped, you decide how big a piece to tear off, no knife or stopping. If you get hungry - well I can't stand the stuff.

2nd choice light weight baked cheese puffs or curlz. It's mostly corn meal like the dog cookies and covered in powdered cheddar. Both these ideas should be cheaper and taste better than the bland dog cookies.

Yea you guessed it, I tried one.:D

Oh I found another one. Old Mother Hubbard BITZ. comes in a 8 ounce bag at most pet stores.
