I"m wondering if the Coleman Powermax fuel can be used with the msr windpro stove? I have read that the powermax fuel operatates better at colder temperatures than the msr brand. Any advice or opinions?

Yes, the stove will run on Coleman Powermax, however don't expect better performance than with the MSR fuel.

Powermax: 90% butane / 10% propane
MSR: 80 butane / 20% propane

Propane is a better cold-temperature fuel. That makes MSR a better choice in cold temps.

Hmmmm....then the regular Coleman cannister (70/30) would be even better in the cold. Does Coleman tell you that? :-?

saimyoji,

I'm not convinced the specs I posted above are correct. I found the composition of Powermax fuel here, (http://www.greatoutdoorsdepot.com/coleman-powermax-fuel.html) but as you point out, it doesn't make sense.

The MSDS (http://www.coleman.com/coleman/msds/peak1.pdf) for Powermax indicates 65%/35%, by volume. If that is true, then one would expect Powermax to perform better in cold temperatures than the MSR fuel.

I’m not going to search for it, but about a week ago I tested the Powermax fuel, stove and lantern on a 5 deg night, and posted the results here. It worked great.

Since you have a Windpro, just use any canister and invert it. Works great.
