Anyone hang a baggy half full of water over the opening of a shelter to keep flies out?

Saw this at a restaurant in Indiana......

So now I guess that we'll be seeing little zip-loc bags half-full of water hanging at all of the AT shelters this year???:-? It might be a welcome change from all of the tin-can-and-string "hiker art"!

Those tin cans are 100% useless.

They use them in stables. I hung a few in my uncles stables last year and before long it was overflowing with flies. There's an attractant (really stinky) that when mixed with water attracts flies.

I use these in my dog kennels...at the FAR end. You hang one of these in a shelter, and Lone Wolf will get his wish - NO ONE will sleep in the shelter!

Would this attractant be any stinkier than your average hiker. If not it won't work.

Bugs are everywhere. If you don't want bugs, sleep in a tent.

The attractant is a smell of dead rotting meat. They have a lot of them in CA. I think the flies are no worse than the dead decaying meat smell that attracts them to the bag to drown.
