I dropped about $4800 in 1999. Of course my girlfriend visited me in Hot Springs and I threw a couple of parties for thru-hikers so we could all meet and enjoy ourselves, and I dropped about $700 in that five days.

I had an excellent time. $2 a mile and common sense mean you can treat yourself on a regular basis.

2003 AT- about 2500 bucks, though my folks were kind enough to drive me to Georgia and pick me up from Katahdin, so no travel expenses were accrued by me. I did buy a new pack, 3pairs shoes, pack cover. Didn't really drink alcohol.

2007 PCT- $4000+ This was including two way airfare, health insurance, living it up in towns (beers, good food), 3 pairs of shoes, Z-Rest and a week of being sick in town, 4 days in Portland, and lots of other things.

2002 - Spent roughly $1000 (gear not included) - Had a great time!
I did without sometimes but that is the way I wanted my thru hike to be.
I had plenty more money to spend if I felt like it.

I spent about $4-5K last year southbound. I replaced out a lot of gear and had a couple nights alone in hotels that upped the price.

Whatever you decide on plan on at least a month of not working when you get back. Back in my pre-hike life sucks.

1999 - $2800, not including gear as I was into backpacking before hitting the trail. I did buy a tent and boots, so add $400 if you want to figure gear.
2001 - $3300, not including gear, although I did buy a new tent and new boots, so figure another $550. I bought much better boots. Other upgrades were due to well placed Christmas gift suggestions.
2006 - $4500, no gear upgrades, although technically speaking you could subtract $2000 due to...winning some valuable prizes.

One thing I noticed about 2006 was that my grocery bill had increased even though I appeared to be buying the same items across the years. $10 to $15 a week starts to add up. Also, back in '99, hotels were waaay cheaper (like $26 to 35 a night including tax).

Hey, Jersey Joe, I read your trail journal, which I liked by the way, and I noticed that you recieved a lot of mail drops. Is the $1000 what you spent while on the trial or does that also include the mail drops?

Thanks OSUBCS!
Yes, that does include mail drops. I had 12 mail drops at roughly 15 dollars apiece. That comes to $180 for mail drops. I bought all of my food in bulk which saved me a lot of money. (i.e. a case of 50 snickers bars for 20 bucks)
