View Full Version : Peanut Butter
Has anyone tried powdered peanut butter? I think it's called PB2 or 2PB or something like that? IMO, powdered PB just sounds all wrong.
1-how did it taste
2-what ratio of water/powder
3-is it worth getting to save on weight over the kind in a jar

I bet it looks and tastes like something that just fell out of a goat.
What a horrible, scary, idea.
Skippy Roasted Honey Nut is the only way to go.
Mmmm. Love peanut butter. I am weight conscious, but I carry a small jar no matter what. Sometimes I put some of that hazelnut chocolate stuff in with it, and mix it up. I am not sure I could down the powdered stuff, but it might be good sprinkled on ice cream at home!

if it reconstituted somewhat correctly, it would be powdered gold on the trail. the problem is high fat foods dont do the dehydrate process too well.
None for me thanks,,I think I will be sticking to smuckers all natural peanut butter myself.
Jif rules.
But what do I know. Ice everywhere, and about 6:15pm it was 65*F in NYC.
67*F in Philly. Bwwaaaah!

Skippy Roasted Honey Nut is the only way to go.Yeah, it could be that bad. Care to bet that's why Rabbit wanted to know if anyone else had tried it before she spent her hard earned money on it?

If you like peanut butter - this is the way to go. I take a couple of these along.

Just the right size for one meal. (one of the four, of course)

Natural peanut butter has well under 2% moisture content if the peanuts are roasted, which they usually are. (Yes, two percent.) You might even say that it is already dehydrated.
I would assume that to make powdered peanut butter you would have to remove the oil. There is little or no advantage in that for hikers.

I saw those at the store, good size for a day trip, well maybe I should say a snack
Two Speed, you're right about that. I heard about the powdered stuff this week, don't think I'll be buying any though, it just sounds gross. I'm a fan of Jif creamy, besides a small plastic jar doesn't weigh all that much considering it gets lighter during the day. I also like almond butter after pouring off the oil.

. . . Two Speed, you're right about that. I heard about the powdered stuff this week, don't think I'll be buying any though, it just sounds gross.I'm willing to bet it is gross. Next, I'm willing to bet it's a royal PITA to mix up. Third, I'll bet it costs more than regular peanut butter. Last, I doubt you could develop a resupply plan based on using dehydrated peanut butter. I sincerely doubt the Food Lion in Erwin, TN, carries dehydrated peanut butter on a regular basis, if you get my drift.
I also like almond butter after pouring off the oil.Haven't tried that. I'll have to look around and see if I can find some.
Nuuuutella.
Love that stuff.I can't have Nutella in the house. Kinda like cheese cake; if it's in the house I'm gonna chow down. Then I get big as a house.
Not good.

I have used it. It reconstitutes with water. Tastes like it is suppose to the texture is a bit grainy if that is a word. We used it on the trail last year.

Really? I am surprised, because I was sure it'd taste like something that fell out of a goat. Or a dog. Or maybe a duck.
Anyway, how did the cost compare to regular peanut butter, how'd you arrange resupply and are you taste impaired, by any chance?

why not just regular 'ol PB?
why not just regular 'ol PB?Duh!
Right, regular peanut butter runs about 180 calories per ounce, one of the most calorie-rich food per ounce that exists. That's not the place to try to save weight. Just MHO.

I don't think I am taste impaired. We ordered it from emergencyessentials.com. We put it sandwich bags and vacuum sealed it and breakfast bars together. the idea being the pbutter would make a good dipping agent. It is very light I don't remember thinking it was expense. The weight savings comes by not carrying the jar and it fits in your pack better. We felt it was a good deal. Taste wise everything tastes good on the trail.
I might take it in addition to my regular PB, to supplement.
Or sprinkle it on my nutella :)

I tried that "Jiff To Go" stuff. I got some downstairs right now. It tastes like crap. I bought it because I liked the way it is packaged. When I got home and tried it . yuck!! I'm going to throw the rest out.

Sounds like powdered PB could be in your future.
......Sometimes I put some of that hazelnut chocolate stuff in with it......That would be Nutella (http://www.nutellausa.com/)! It's one of my favorite snacks on a wheat tortilla wil banana slices. Yum! http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/ad/groupwave.gif (http://www.freesmileys.org)

If they made it in a plastic jar, it would be a no brainer for me! I love Goober peanut butter.:D

The little packets of Justin's (http://www.justinsnutbutter.com/shopping-cart.php) are tasty, available by the box at Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/s.html?ie=UTF8&node=3580501&brand=Justin%27s%20Nut%20Butters) and by singles at Minimus (http://www.minimus.biz/SearchResult.aspx?KeyWords=peanut%20butter) if you want to do away with the big jars... but PB keeps darn well... so...
I like to use Skippy in the squeeze tube. Weighs the same, but fits in my food bag better. http://www.peanutbutter.com/squeezeProducts.asp
I can only find it at Giant around here though.

I haven't tried the powdered PB yet but I think I would prefer real PB over powdered PB.

It may be worth trying sprinkled over ice cream.
I think I’m going to order some to give it a try, after all it can’t kill me…
pb powdered or dried (oil extracted) makes no sense to me. Pb natural and fresh is fantastic and dense calories. Take it like it is.
